How do I remove a ZL1 spoiler??? Aligning pins?

I have a ZL1 trunklid/spoiler I got from Kelly (Veteran1) and I'm trying to figure out the best way to separate said spoiler from trunklid without doing damage. I need to paint it and it's got to come apart.

The 4 outer nuts were cake, no problem, but there's what looks like plastic retainer nuts (grabs threads of the stud) and the access is NOT very friendly, if not downright impossible. I tried to basically pull it out of the nut, but dang if they don't grab tigher than Dick's hat band. I don't want to dent or break anything. I thought about my plastic pry bar set, but there's foam seals under the spoiler that I don't want to hose up.

Anyone familiar with this?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but it IS ZL1 specific.

You need to remove the trunk lid liner. I believe that there are a total of 6 (six) nuts that you have to remove and the plastic guide pin, so on your trunk lid there are 7 (seven) holes.

It's a bit different from an SS. The ZL1 has the four outer nuts, then the two inner retainers are meant to pry off the studs with a flat blade/trim tool. The retainers will break and need new ones for the re-install.

Basically get something thin under the retainer and pry them (they may break) off the studs. I'd leave a couple outer nuts on, so the spoiler doesn't fly off while futzing with the inner retainers.
Don't pull up on the spoiler until both retainers are off, and all four nuts.

The trunk underside is bare right now and not on the car, with the latch, cover and all that removed. I'll try and take some pics tomorrow. There is NO direct access holes to these inner retainers. Maybe if you have extra long, and I mean extra long needle nose you may could reach them. These things act like a zip tie in a way. You put the insert in the hole, and the threaded stud would push down through the center of the insert, spreading out a couple of ratchet teeth that essentially let you push it in tighter, but won't let it come back the other way.

I'm thinking if I could somehow reach it with a hacksaw blade or curved pick I could somehow bend the tabs or break them. Real PITA to reach them from the bottom side.

Part number for the inserts is 22761970 in case anyone is going to need them. They're like nearly $4 list price each from GM.

Maybe take a long thin flat blade screw driver... bend the end into an L. Sharpen the tip on a grinder, and try to snake it in there through the hole and under the retainer. ? Or two dental pics?

The service manual just says to pry off the retainers with a flat blade. Sounds like they forget to mention not much access.

Took the advice of simply prying them off with plastic pry tools. Of course the plastic retainers (4) were destroyed getting them out. If you don't have a ZL1 trunk lid you may not need the new outer locator pins, but I need to replace them because the holes are already there.

Now, if you're changing colors of the spoiler, let me tell you what fun is in store for you should you remove the third brakelight to ensure proper color change....

PITFA! First off, there's little red plastic screw covers. Take a tiny pick and they pop right out. No issue. Then, T15 headed screws just sit and spin...wtf? Again, using plastic pry tools, you peel up the adhesive strip in the front (or rear, more specifically) of the lamp some trying to put pressure on whatever's spinning inside holding the screws on. Of course, that didn't help me at all.

I finally got it off, but ended up breaking the blob of whatever the f** was holding down some flare nuts installed backwards in the spoiler. And the nuts are still stuck tighter than crap on the bottom of the lamp. Talk about cheap and crappy construction. It's very fixable with another blob of adhesive, but talk about Chinese cheap...might be made in Canada, but it sure isn't what I call quality. Should have been designed better sincethe gorilla torque they used on the little screws didn't need to be applied. Adhesive does most of the work anyway.

Interestingly, the sticker on the bottom of the spoiler says "Olympic White" instead of Summit White....I know it's the same thing, but really? Where else is this spoiler used?

No wonder they rip the plastic shipping coating out from under the spoiler instead of taking it off to do it!!!!

Has anyone come up with the proper way of removing the ZL1 spoiler? I don't want to break anything. el ess X is right. The two plastic retainer nuts are a PITA!

Anyone have the service manual instructions for this issue? Verbatim? I don't want to shell out $200 for a paper copy of the service manual. Probably would if I could download it. This is the 21st century afterall.

I guess there is no exact procedure, this is straight from the helms manual:

3. Rear End Spoiler Retainer (Qty: 2)
Note: Rear End spoiler retainer breaks on removal, replace as needed.
4. Rear End Spoiler
Procedure
Use a suitable plastic flat bladed tool to release the rear end spoiler retainers from the deck lid.
