Doubt they require it. But politics can lead to overreaction. Another bad winter and Texas may be banning 2WD vehicles from the interstates like they do on I-70 in Colorado.

For occasional snow/ice and no serious hills, I vote 2WD with all-seasons.

How do they enforce a law like that? Or... do they not bother unless you get in an accident on I-70 with a 2WD vehicle?

Agreed. Btw, by "required", I meant "necessary" not legally required.

Is FWD sufficient? Thanks in advance
Get all wheel drive. My mom’s and bother’s front wheel drive suv suck in the snow. 1/2 the time we have to tow them out of the drive way. We ended up trading my mom’s in for an awd model and it is much better

You mean like when they say 4WD with snow tires required during a storm over passes when it’s bad enough? Is that what you are trying to say? Really struggling to understand what you are saying here. In most mountain states, they have vehicle restrictions when there are bad storms and the highways are in very bad condition as a result. They say wait to travel until they have plowed everything and it's no longer dangerous, but if you need to travel, they have restrictions to try and mitigate the risk. If you've never lived in a real mountain state, maybe you've never experienced this? They'll also shut the highways down completely if it gets bad enough.

I still do not understand why so many people are relating their experiences with 3+ feet of snow to this thread. Texas averages .01 inches of snow a YEAR people. Quit telling this person they need to get geared up to adventure in the Artic Circle. Surprised no one has mentioned chains or a snowmobile...

Very true (studded tires, too)

Back in NJ (5-7 feet per year) wifey had an AWD SUV, but before that she drove a FWD model and things only got slightly dicey for her once, in 2013 or 2014 if I remember correctly, when a ginormous nor'easter dropped several feet in two days.

You adjust your speed and throttle/brake handling and try to avoid the idiots, I don't think a little bit of snow down in Texas would be the end of the world for any "winter vehicle" or even a Camaro. I do see icy roads being a potential issue here in the Smokies, but not really in the flatlands.

Snow, especially deep snow, is rare - but we do get sleet and freezing rain regularly here in NE TX. Not often enough to consider studs, though.

They get freezing rain from the northern border down to north Texas usually several times a year. That is no joke and you don't want to be caught in it. I've seen it bad enough it shuts everything down for days, just freezing rain. The point though is you can easily outlast it and just not drive for a couple days. You don't need to have a basement full of MREs, you can easily live on your BBQ fat for a few days.

As usual, it IS a requirement, but enforcement is vague. I'm guessing if your 2WD Yukon plows into somebody in a storm, you are getting a citation. Here's an explanation:

My mom’s and bother’s won’t get out of our plowed, hard packed drive way that is a slight incline. Small 2 wheel drive suv suck in the snow. A front wheel drive car has no problem with it. My brother has terrain and my mom had a traverse I think. There is hardly any cost difference between the 2. I personally would go with a car over a fwd suv for snow.
