Remove brake backing plates for road course?? - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

Yes it's a technical brake question, but I'm posting here to avoid answers from drag racers.

Has anyone, for use on a road course, removed the brake backing plates ("dust shields") from the front brakes? As an engineer, I understand these things serve various purposes, but I'm thinking they may block a whole lot of radiative heat transfer from leaving the back of the rotor.

Potential problems I see include melting stuff behind the rotor (such as ABS sensor wiring) and/or allowing flaming pieces of brake pad to pierce the rubber brake line.

I'm not interested in a brake duct debate (I have the Z28 brake ducts), just an answer of whether anyone has done this and whether it has helped with brake temperatures and wear.

I think if you look at the ZL1/1LE/Z28 backing plates for the front they are very small and do not block/cover nearly as much of the back side of the rotor.

I just happened to have my 1LE up on the lift with the wheels off so I went out and snapped a few pics for you.

I also believe that if you order the 6-piston brake upgrade kit from Chevrolet Performance Parts they send this smaller backing plate with because otherwise the standard backing plate would interfere with the caliper.

Wow, thank you... this is NOT what my backing plates look like!!! Looks like it is indeed a 1LE thing. Found this on gmpartsdirect.com, and I guess I need a 20944531 and a 20944532:

I have been without them for some time. I was led to believe they are to protect those bushings more than anything else.

How are those held on? I heard the rears are held on by 3 tack welds?

They are bolted on, between the hub and the spindle

Rears are the same as the 2SS

I didn't have to modify my front plates at all going from 4 to 6 piston.

You already had a 1LE which came with the smaller backing plates. The regular SS's came with the larger backing plates.
