Fuse block fire

Hey guys! Once again I find myself a camaro owner. I've owned many camaros and TAs. My uncle gave me this one as it has some issues thanks to a former customer of his.

So this is what happens when water in the trunk hits the fuse block. My question is has this happened to anyone else here? Search hasn't turned up anything. I think my biggest concern is replacing the wiring harness. Any experience with this? Thanks in advance!

The car is a 2016 w/ 3.6

Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry you had this happen. I’m not sure what would cause water in the trunk other than either your trunk wasn’t closed all the way or the weather seals aren’t flush to the body when closed.

This is definitely something you will need to file with your insurance and have a dealer fix. Simply replacing the fuse block and wire harness is just the tip of the iceberg. There are components in the car that run 24/7/365 even if it’s been parked for a month. It’s entirely possible as the harness shorted it took out the ECM or BCM. I hope that’s not the case and I hope I’m not scaring you, just wanted to prepare you for worst case possibility.

Yeah the customer did not know she could claim it on her insurance and let the insurance elapse by the time we repoed it.

My thinking is the fuses did their job and cut power before any harm was done. The wiring harness is $900 alone.

Unfortunately you won’t know that until you replace what you can see is damaged then connect a new battery. After you’ve already spent the money for the harness and fuse block.

As I read it, you were given the car. If I had this given to me, I would definitely invest $900 plus some time to flip it (or drive it)!

Probably could find a harness in a junk yard by now for a 2016.

Seems like a fun project I would love in this current isolation

Ahh, yes! The fun of going to a "you-pull-it" and extracting the harness only to do it again on the car it's going into!
I think we have different definitions of "fun."
Good luck with your search!

LOL. Yeah, people fish for fun too but I'd rather have a root canal.

I love working on electronics, wiring and solder. Just something that is fun to me. Coop me up for 3 months and I think it qualifies as a fun project.

Junkyarddog that harness and see what comes back. Can't hurt.

Update: I was actually able to purchase the fusebox and two feet of wiring harness coming from it so I could simply splice the wires together using solder and heatsinks. Not ideal but if done correctly it's the strongest part of the wire. I did use the Nasa approved method according to a video I found. Also have harness tape on the way to clean things up.

The good: There are no engine codes, everything(almost) seems to work, and it has a full tank of gas!

The bad: I get the "no remote detected" warning even though the remotes work except when cranking inside the car. I have to place the key inside the cupholder. Remote start door locks works fine. Also the only fuse that blows is the steering wheel fuse. What is that used for? All buttons on the wheel are working. Car steers fine. Maybe the two issues are connected?

I did reprogram the keys.

Thanks for sharing this. From the original damage pic - who tried to fix this with a Gauze Pad? LOL!
