I am not sure why. These cars are tuned for E10 fuel. And E10 is higher octane then 93. So you are only going backwards.

Not likely. GM tuned both the LT4 and LT1 to live off the knock sensors. They show knock regardless of what fuel you run at the pump. The knock sensors are setup to be overly sensitive. likely to protect the engines from those who will put 87 in them.

Not sure about the LT1, but the LT4 does not like 91...
My ZLE not only runs better but makes so much more power on E50...

Plenty of E85 around so-cal... I suggest you call TED @ JRE for his FlexFuel kit and remote tune package... WELL worth the $$$

Its not a daily driver, some times it sits for 3-4 weeks at a time. Just don't want that ethanol breaking down and gunking up injectors etc. I have never liked ethanol.

[QUOTE=KingLT1;11169206]I am not sure why. These cars are tuned for E10 fuel. And E10 is higher octane then 93. So you are only going backwards.

Typically any E10 fuel is created by blending 10% ethanol with a lower octane base fuel to reach the desired octane rating. Thus 93 Octane is typically 91 octane gasoline blended with 10% ethanol. In other words, the 10% ethanol blend is roughly a 2+ octane rise in octane rating. You are getting what the pump advertises, not some octane 2 points higher.

Ah, I see, thanks. I'm not an expert, but don't think 10% ethanol would be enough for that, otherwise this would plague a large number of (non-daily driver) vehicles.

You are probably correct on that, and I will probably start fueling up on 93 with E10 a little more often based off what I read on here I am probably overthinking it.

You are overthinking this. E10 still cools better and provides more detonation resistance vs E0 93...It's been proven. Either way the fuel systems in these cars are designed to handle Ethanol based fuels without issues. I leave Ethanol(E40 +) in my 2016 SS with 15k miles year round. It sits all winter without being driven...no issues.

Dirt bike and mower isn't the same thing. They don't have fuel system components designed to handle Ethanol fuels like newer GM vehicles do. I always put Lucas Ethanol treatment in my gas cans for 2 and 4 stroke engines.

Does the computer actually know when a fuel less than 93 is being used or does it only know there is more pre-ignition, knock?
The car seems to run the same and seems to get decent MPG, just wondering how much timing is being pulled out using 91 octane fuel.

It seems to be compensating for the thin air very well. Still runs like a beast when needed, or wanted.
You won't experience any difference between 91 and 93.

^This. I come from BMW world, where Turbo motors are more susceptible to heat soaking, and E85 is common when tuning to alleviate heat issues. The spray of high pressure E85 actively cools the cylinder walls. On a NA motor this isn't as much of a concern, but cooler motor is usually a happy motor.

I suspect there are a lot of V8 drivers doing the 93 vs lower grade experiment given current fuel prices. probably not the type to be members here though!

as others have said, the ecu will just pull timing and run off the lower grade fuel. No CEL or other warning will pop up. Manufacturers plan for this scenario.
