So I started the car up remotely from my house, I put the phone up to the window to be as close as possible with still being in the house, the db reader read 64db. I started the car up again when I got away from my house and it read 88db from 2 feet away

You’re doing nothing wrong. If you were revving it and setting off car alarms, that’s a different story. But those startup times and keeping at 1500rpm, doesn’t sound catastrophic to me.

I'm curious: How was the phone actually positioned and oriented when you took the reading from "2 feet away"?

For a reasonable 'reference' reading, you would probably want it to be perpendicular to the ground, microphone pointed directly towards the rear of the car, about a foot off of the ground, centered between the exhausts, and probably at least 8-10' back.

When measuring from a distance, you could use the same guidelines as above but keep in mind that at a certain point the sound level you're measuring includes a lot of ambient noise.

Just buy a Fender Stratocaster and a full Marshall stack amplifier. Learn to play. Next time they complain you open your windows and crank it up for an hour.

I held the phone right next to the passenger side, the same angle they hear it start up from

Was the 88dB reading a peak at start, or at idle afterward? My idle is about 25dB below the cold start value, and cold start sound levels last about 2 seconds.

Sorry about your situation.

I have similar reactions with a neighbor's wife. He's a Constable and I live outside of the city. We have goats crying and roosters crowing in the vicinity. Moreover, he drives a lifted pick-up with loud mufflers. He told his wife it's fine because it's only at startup.

88db was the peak startup, the db reader will list the max db of the recorded session on the side, it never went above 88db on startup

Makes sense. My car (stock, no NPP) registered about 85dB at 10' on a cold start. Resetting the app once the idle settles shows it peaking then at about 60dB.

Since you measured from the side, the actual reading for your car on cold start is likely more like about 92-93 measured similarly to how I did mine and I'm guessing the idle level would be more around 65.
