ON A PERSONAL NOTE: Don't buy junk intercoolers....

Ok, so this post (and video) have nothing to do with my day job.
But, this was something I was helping a friend out with,...figured I would share.

Even though I don't see much intercooler swapping going on in the 6th Gen world yet... just a lesson for those looking to possible do that.

Now the back story....

My friend has a 2v mustang...and for a while has been fighting "belt slip" and "tensioner problems" while not really making much rwhp. Even going to the extremes of having his blower upgraded and converting to an 8 rib drive.

So obviously a good amount of money has been spent trying to make more power with this car. Well, finally I get my hands on the car when it comes time to re-tune it....

First thing I noticed, the car doesn't like the "normal" amount of timing I would run.

Second thing I noticed, the car doesn't make near the "expected" boost for the amount of blower speed it has.

So without doing another pull on the dyno, its time to do the easiest check in the world. HOW MUCH BACK PRESSURE is the intercooler creating?

Why is this test easy?
Well because it doesn't involve any fancy sensors, just a simple pressure gauge.

Why is this test important?
Well because let's say for ever psi of boost you make = 10 degrees increase.
So if your intercooler is causing an 11psi restriction. It has now created 110 degrees of temperature that it needs to cool down.

If it's causing MORE temp and load then it's curing, well then whats the point of it? That is the "internet question of the day"

Hope you all enjoy my crude, joke around video....

NOTE: This is not ProChargers dyno (that is a shop called House of Boost) and this is just one of my buddies cars, again, nothing to do with "work"

You've a nice casual way of relating mathematical/thermodynamic principles.

Very informative! Definitely worthwhile to buy quality parts.

great video and points, definitely post a follow up after the intercooler upgrade.

My GF says I am too casual about a lot of things... LOL.

Well, there are "GOOD" cheap parts out there. BUT, unless you actually do a back to back test, its often times hard to know if you got good stuff or not.

I will let you all know (or click subscribe to my youtube channel)

I am going to test the car in three ways, back to back, same day.

- Junk intercooler still on it.
- No intercooler at all.
- ProCharger intercooler he picked up used off Craigslist

Not going to change the tune at all between runs.
I know the file is solid no matter how much air or heat is thrown at it.

Was the cooler used, plugged up? I've seen bad coolers out there but I've used lot's of cheap e-bay stuff into the 7 second zone.

I won't be calling out the brand....

Because frankly, I know of about (5) different brands that all use this same company overseas to make their intercoolers. (all just branded differently)
Kinda like the wheel industry....my wheels were $180 each, yet another brand sells them for about $480 with a different logo on them. Same plant made the wheels, just put them in a different box. LOL.

Yes, SOME of them are good...
But I have tested (3) of the same intercooler from the same company,
Even the same part number... and got (3) different flow results.
So THAT is an eye opener. Seems core consistency is lacking.

I am going to be finishing up the follow up video later this weekend, as I literally change nothing, and swap between intercoolers and show the results on the dyno. (no tune changes, no pulley swaps, just back to back runs with the camera rolling)
