6th gen V6 A8 as fast as 4th gen LS1?

Sounds a bit far fetched at first but when you start looking at the two on paper it starts looking closer to reality than fantasy. Well, that is if AL O's promise of a 300lb weight reduction holds true on the V6 model. The LS1 kills the V6 on torque but the superior gearing/shift time/shift recovery could balance that equation (maybe). Let's take a look at the known specs and compare.

1998-2000 base Formula/Z28-

Curb weight-3425lbs
Power-335HP/350TQ
4L60E gear ratios with the 3.23 rear gear multiplied-
1st-9.88
2nd-5.24
3rd-3.55
T56 gear ratios with the 3.42 rear gear multiplied
1st-9.09
2nd-6.08
3rd-4.44
4th-3.42

2016 Camaro V6-

Curb weight-3407lbs(projected base)
Power- 335HP /284TQ
8L45 gear ratios with a 2.57 rear gear ratio multiplication (the 2.57 ratio is to account for the different tire height)

1st-11.87
2nd-7.81
3rd-5.31
4th-4.26

Will the superior gearing, shift times and shift recovery be good enough to overcome a 66lbs of TQ disadvantage? We will have to find out. I don't think it will but I do think it will end up being damn close. Like only a couple tenths and mph.

To give you an idea of how fast the new V6 could potentially be the hero ET runs for a 4th gen LS1 F body are in the high 12's with hero traps in the 108mph range. Most everyone into cars has read about or heard of the Evan Smith piloted bone stock 1999 Z28 that ran 12.8 and the 2001 SS that ran a 12.9 (the SS's run was in positive DA summer heat BTW) but there are many other LS1 f body cars that ran high 12's as well by private owners. Even 1 or 2 A4 cars did it although the M6 cars were faster with the right driver.

If the weight holds true I think V6 hero times could be in the low 13's and that is pretty damn quick for a lower model Camaro. If I get a 6th gen it will be a SS or bust but this is meant to excite those of you who are looking at getting a V6.

It's pretty common knowledge that the BHP of the LS1 was 350 across the board. So using 335hp for comparison sake is already skewing the figures. On top of that GM can dream all they want but no 2016 is going to hit a curb weight of 3400lbs.

You are correct about the HP for the LS1. I think it should also be noted that a majority of LS1 A4s had 2.73 gears. The 3.23 was an option found most often on the SS/WS6 cars.

You prepared to eat those words about curb weight? Pretty sure he said the base 4 and 6s will be as much as 300lbs lighter than the comparable 5th gen models, with extra the technologies.

No, it wasn't until the later years that they got the LS6 intake manifold and started putting out more power.

More like 330 then 345hp.

I highly doubt we will see 12.99 from a v6 6th gen hero run. 13.3 is my guess, for a hero run.

I've been saying it should run with most stock ls1 cars and even stock v8 5th gens and each time people either laugh or say Im "reaching". On paper it should be good but we won't ruly know till it puts down some real times. Really exciting to see the possibility of v6 cars running that strong. Good times indeed.

What is weird is that the 1/4th times for the ATS have been all over the place. They seem to consistently get mid 5 second 0-60 times, but I've seen everything from 13.8 to 14.3 for the quarter. Given the A8 adds a new variable to the comparison, I'm not sure what to expect. I hope you are right, but I guess we will have to wait to see.

I think a stock L99 might have it's hands full. Regardless we are looking at a strong V6 that will make 5.7 Chargers/Challengers drivers sweat.

Wasnt the LS1 in the 99 Z/28 "rated" at 315HP and the SS "rated" at 325HP?

Just like the Trans Am was 315 and the WS-6 was 325?

As potent as the ls3 cars are they are also harder to launch so auto vs manual could make for a run with an iffy launch on the SS. I'm just glad the 6th gen gets the full power with an auto this time around. I always felt gm screwed up on that aspect with the 5th gen.

I'd be willing to run against anyone who buys a 6th Gen V-6 ...... I have a 4th Gen Z with LS1 4-speed Auto ....... I haven't ran my car recently at the track but when I did I was able to run consistent low 13s ( 13.12@106 was best time and did a 13.2x on numerous occasions) .......... I'm near ATCO but I live in Phila .... PM if anyone wants to test the ruggedness of the 6th Gen V-6 .......

I will tell you, the 4th Gen cars are very light and I doubt the 6th Gen V-6 will be anywhere near the 3,400lb mark, my guess is the V-6 will be somewhere in the ballpark of around 3,605lbs ..... I had my 2002 Z28 weighed and it comes in @3,370lbs ...... granted mine has Zero options like Zero power everything .... that was the way it was ordered when new

Did you miss the part about Al O. saying the 2.0T and V6 were almost 300lbs lighter than the previous gen?
