Ahhh yeah. Our own Subforum. So... (Autox)

Thank you mods for creating our own little corner. Hopefully this place doesn't turn into the typical RR vs AX discussions that many forums get stuck on.

Do you think the Gen6 will be in FS? I hope so, but I'm not ordering one until it's announced which class it goes into, because a) I think it can run with the top of the class in FS, and b) I don't want it to be a back marker in BS or AS.

I like the fact that there is a subforum for this now I do plan on hitting autox and track with my baby. Probably never a drag strip though. Will be months before I do that due to winter approaching/being here.

I took delivery of my 1SS last weekend. I'm 90% sure it will be FS based on... reasons.

Great subforum!
I'll be trading in my 2014 BMW 335i for a Camaro next year and will most definitely do AX events as well as take it to the track (Summit Point). I just hope the 2SS will perform as well as if not better than the bimmer.
Waiting for lease numbers at the moment.

I wonder how many other sandboxers will be here. Will be interesting to say the least.

No news yet but it looks like they're discussing this at the SCCA forum as well

IMHO, the 6th gen Camaro has potential in FS; if and only if, a 1LE type variant with wider wheels is included in the class somewhere down the road. It needs 10" wide front wheels to win. The BMW M3s are still the car
of the class for now. The only possible alternative is the new STP class, which excludes the BMWs, I believe. However, the STP class has other rules- such as it limits IRS cars to 10" width rims; but allows stick axle earlier Pony cars 11" wheels!

Difficult times to run a new stock Pony car in SCCA FS autocross, ask any new Mustang owner like me! Sittin' this one out until the dust settles....

Best Regards, and Happy New Year!
John

San Diego Region Autocross January 10, 2016 :

FS - 'F Street' - Total Entries: 3 Trophies: 1, Club, Times, Total Time Diff.
(4 Runs)
1T FS 856 William F., 13 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE, SCNAX, 71.767+3, 64.280, 70.932+4, 62.452
2 FS 22 Matt W. 16 BMW M3 DCCSD 65.329, 63.888, 250.591+94.2(DSQ Sound-94.2 db!?), 67.349+3; +1.436 from leader
3 FS 282 Sidney C. 04 BMW M3, SCNAX, 72.491+1, 65.475+DNF, 69.525+1, 66.926; +3.038 from second

Summary:

#1 Will F. - (2015 SDR FS Champ) 2013 1LE MRR 19"x10 & 11" wheels with 285/35-19 RE-71Rs
#2 Matt W. - (2015 SDR FS #2 with 2009 BMW M3) NOW with 2016 BMW M3 (wheels and tires UNK) If Matt hadn't coned his last run, he would have clipped Will.
#3 Sidney C. - 2004 BMW M3 (wheels and tires UNK) Sidney obviously having difficulty with a tight course, and slowed to get a clean run.

Will started last year with Hankook 285/20", went to 305/20", then to 19"MRRs and RE-71Rs. Good driver.
Matt ran his "old" BMW last year with RE-11s and just barely lost to Will for the year. This is evidently his first auto-x with the new 2016 BMW. Good driver.
Sidney ran last half of last year with RE-11s. Definitely in the hunt as a rapidly improving driver.

John missed this event. (Distant 3rd last year in 2012 & 2015 Mustang GT with Dunlop 275/19" square.) John is sitting on the sidelines waiting for the FS/STP/ESP local classes to shake out, and the dust to settle before he invests big $$$ in tires, wheels, and dampers, etc. Stay tuned....

Next event January 31. For more info on San Diego Region, schedules, past results, forum, etc.; go to

Ok. There's one. Will finished 10sec behind the FS winner at the tour last year, admittedly with 2 DNFs on his 1st two runs, so he probably gave up some time on his 3rd run to just get a clean run for day 1.

Didn't go to nats... but locally, a win is a win!

I think the new Camaro can take it to the BMWs. It may come down to course.

I think the old Camaro could on most "normal" Nationals courses. The head-to-head last year was on the practice course which wasn't the most favorable for the 5th gen compared to the M3. Also it doesn't help that Bridgestone hasn't made a big enough tire for the old 1LE.

I think the new car will be able to win, but the big question in my mind is which trans will be the best?

Let's get real here. At the 2015 Nats we can throw out Bryan H. in the 1st place BMW, 'cause Bryan would have won in a dump truck. But the rest of the field in the top ten were BMWs and a few Fords. Nearest 1LE was Corsaro, who I imagine was prepped and ready, in 11th. He was, I understand, running 285 RE-71Rs; which are as big as the OEM tires on a 1LE.
The 2016 Camaro SS is stuck with 8.5" front wheels, folks; and lighter or not, that is a problem. A 275 RE-71R is going to be a bit of a pinch.

Good luck and Best Regards. I will go back to the sand box now. P.S. Bet yer money on the automatic....
