Finishing FBO torque management questions?
So I'm ordering the last of my bolt on setup and I plan to have Brett from Pray tune for me as soon as I get a hold of him haha, with the 2017 and up A8 trans do you have to unlock the TCM to tune the torque management settings. I raced a buddy of mine that's tuned by Pray and his car is insane off the hit due to the torque management tuning.

Trans tune is an additional $200. The 16's are the only ones unlocked from factory.

Well, the unlock from HP Tuners is $200 for which you have to mail your TCM in for. Then, when you reinstall it, it’s another $200 in HP Tuners credits to license the TCM. Plus actual tuning costs if you pay a tuner.

Yea I just wasn't sure if the torque management aspect of tuning required the trans to be unlocked or if it had to do with the ECM talking to the transmission. I wasn't planning on tuning the trans yet but if I need to for the torque management then I will for sure

Another opinion, FWIW:
I can say that I think it was worth the extra ~$450 (with shipping/insurance) and time to unlock the TCM. I have Bretts tune as well, but due to covid and stuff, i only did a couple of mods to start with last year. But one of those was pulling/unlocking the TCM so i could load Bretts full tune. And with just a couple of changes to intake, E85, and the full tune, the car really woke up. As you noted of your friends, stomping it from a hit or slow roll was insane. First few times I did that, the 1-2 shift i thought the car was going to come off the ground. OK, a bit of exageration there, but needless to say, i am a happy customer and the TCM tune was a big part of it. I finished my fbo plans, and it is still insane fun to drive. If you got it, take the extra bucks and time, and get it done. If performance is your focus, pretty sure you will not be sorry. |

That's pretty much what I'm thinking too. The torque management tuning is huge from what I've seen. I'm gkna have to just wait that little bit longer for HPtuners to unlock my TCM and send it back I guess lol. It's hard having parts just sitting and waiting though...
