2018 ZL1 1LE CF Wing Install

For those that didn't see this buried in another thread, here is the "install experience" video I made for the carbon fiber wing:

Again, my thanks to TGMPG for the fantabulous service!

Nice video, I've got a ZL1 1LE coming later this month. In another video I saw that the decklid for the ZL1 1LE is different from the standard ZL1 due to the added downforce at speed. The decklid is actually reinforced on the underside. This was in a video done by Mike Davenport, a Chevy salesman. As long as you're not tracking it I think you're fine though.

How did your friend remove the black paint from his CF insert?
Did he have to get it clear coated?

In order of credibility are:
1. Politicians
2. Con artists
3. Car salesmen

The whole reinforcement debate is just a bunch of blowhards trying to sound like they know something technical. The lid is fine on all '17 ZL1s.

He's a pro - and does that stuff for a living. He did the clearcoat himself, and says he's planning to redo it. From what I saw of the project, it's not for the amateur to try.

LOL, that is hilarious. I'm sure he got the info from a Chevy engineer though, he wasn't the primary source of information. I know on the Viper ACR that the decklid is reinforced on the underside for the added downforce especially for track use. Was just curious if this was similar or not.

Been a subscriber of yours for a bit now, love all of your videos (I am a pistol instructor). I watched that wing video and I must say, you've cost me money in many areas. This one may cost me more haha.

Best compliment I can give!

With the discussion here about the trunk on the zl-1 being reinforced or not, does that mean it's not advised to try and put this on a regular SS? It's a lot of coin for this but, to me, looks fantastic and eventually I would love to put this on my 1SS.

So after some further delving into this, the wing applies 300lbs of added down force on the rear of the car at 150mph. I think for regular street driving most everyone should be ok, but on track the reinforcement may not be a bad idea.

LOL - sorry about that! Just wait until I do a video on the new SIG Legion P220...

My buddy has hit over 140 MPH on his 2017 SS with this wing on without the alpha patch supported trunk... with no ill effect that we can see. Now maybe if this car is running full race car and peaking 150+ MPH over and over again the trunk could see some wear over time. But as of now, the updated trunk might not be needed for daily street drivers.

That being said, I have seen 2015 Z/28's with wings like this mounted getting pushed in on the outside mounts.

But... two different GM engineers highlighted that all 2018 Camaros will come with the Alpha patched trunks at Camaro Fest. What that means, no one knows. From my first look it could simply be a semi thicker metal sheeting, as I have not seen an additional apparent support added. But hey, I am just a simple car guy.

The pro that helped me install my CF wing indicated reinforcement was present. Good enough for me. Also, as I've said previously - GM sells this part with only one possible application, without a disclaimer - it's on them. Warranty.

Not sure if you watch other people's vids, and car videos is not my forte' but I have one on the wing install.

Its odd that none of GM's marketing or detail sheets actually highlight the actual down force provided by the aero bits. I found one odd reference from a engineer saying the car has 300lbs of downforce and a few outlets linking that to the wing only.

At this time GM calls out:
Quote:
race inspired splitter and dive planes.
They also say:
Quote:
Downforce-producing aero: Unique features include a carbon fiber rear wing, specific air deflectors and dive planes on the front fascia that produce grip-generating downforce to help the car stick harder and drive faster in turns.
I have seen this specific call out a lot:
Quote:
The aero package has a front splitter, dive planes and high-mounted rear wing good for 300 pounds of downforce at 150 mph
But overall I would love to know what the wing alone brings to the table.

To change the tune... I remember the Viper ACR has like 1.5g in turns and 1,700lbs of downforce at top speeds and 1,200lbs at 150mph or something crazy like that.
