After a while, I am digging the mail slot.
I remember when the new 2010 Camaros came out one of the biggest WTFs was the odd mail slot that was incorporated into the front fascia of the SS. I know I was one those people that just couldn't understand how they would place something like that on the V8s, and was jealous that the V6ers didn't have to worry about it. The clean front look was just so desireable that SLP came out with a mail slot delete to get rid of that hideous gap.
Well now that the ZL1 has been put out into production and you are seeing them out in the step along with SSs, and V6s, I'm now enjoying my mail slot because it's become a signifying element of a Super Sport. You have your regular LTs with a clean front look, then you have a SS with a mail slot in the front, and now the ZL1 with, well you get where I am going. Now with an aftermarket part designed by ACS Composites that allow you to now make our mail slots functional by allowing some cooler air into the engine makes me very exstatic! I guess what I am trying to say is that just by recognizing a 5th Gens front nose, you can automatically tell what is what, which I believe is really cool and very useful on helping in distinguishing the different 5th Generation Camaros identities without a badge. I really do hope, if by change which I highly doubt for this generation, that the Z ..."WHAT Z28???", follows the same identity mark that the rest have. |

That's the first thing I look for when I see another Gen5 Camaro on the road ..... whether or not it has a mail slot.

Got to admit, I don't like "style/design" for it alone, functionality is also very important to me.
But gots to say, when tooling down the road at 50mph, I can pick out an SS a mailslot away!! |

I've liked the mail slot from the beginning. I think it gives it a distinguished and more aggressive look.

I told my son that you could tell a V8 from a V6 by looking for the mail slot, now he sees every Camaro on the road. I like the concept of making it functional but I dont like to think about how much more dirt and road debre it would let into the engine bay.

Though I did see someone fabricate their own and they put a scoop to make air flow down the radiator instead of over that seems a bit more functional. |

It seems our cars run so darn hot, even a bit more air couldn't hurt. I have a one car attached garage and after a drive I park it there and close the garage door, hours later it is still warm inside the garage.

I think the idea here is that the more air is allowed to move over the engine, the more heat will dissipate. The lower the heat around the engine, the less temperature differential between the engine bay and the intake box. That will mean less heat transfer into the intake and cooler air. The real question is will it matter...probably not, but its still cool to make something that is just cosmetic, functional...

I want to know who coined the "mailslot" term.

problem is, unless you cut the rubber hood seal, the air isn't going near the engine..
..and for a V6 that was built to run ^210 degrees, won't cooling it affect performance in some way(I can understand if it's miserably hot and you need to dissipate the heat..) |

I have liked the SS slot since the first time I saw it
