can i swap out block without machine work?
i dropped a valve awhile back and ruined my block and 1 piston. I currently have the cp drop in rods and pistons. I am debating between a darton sleeve short block from texas speed and a budget repair of just swapping the block and the piston.
if I order a new lt1 block is it ready for assembly? it sounds like the bores are finished honed and it comes with cam bearings installed. seems like it might be ready to put together. I would do the basics like set the thrust bearing, check the endplay, plastigauge the bearings, get new rings and file them. if there more that needs to be done?

I would call Tx Speed, my experience has always been the shop that installs the sleeves wants an piston with specs so the final hone is right at clearance. Of course forged pistons have a lot of slop. Say .005 and up. They maybe able just to hone it for the piston you have via part number, or since you ordering your piston, you might just buy it from TxSpeed. I'm retired now and may or may not get a job (don't want one). If you go with Texas Speed, let me know and I maybe able to drive the block to you. My kid is going to school in Michigan and I've been thinking about a road trip. I'd even help you install it... I got experience. LOL.

Thanks for the offer.
I am not considering putting a sleeved block together myself. I would have them at least do the complete short block. I am asking about getting a stock block and swapping my parts over to it. My crank, rods, pistons(one new).

You would need to finish hone to get the .005 piston to cylinder clearance. If memory serves, the stock piston clearance is in the .0025 range.

The drop is are for the stock bore, so they should work. I see no reason why a new stock block can’t be used, actually even the bearings could be reused if the look ok, my current standby race engine for my type r has the same main bearings that left the factory 23 years ago. I’d go for main studs, even the rings can be reused if they spec out correctly on end gap. I checked and a complete set for me was $110 but they are file fit. I did not change the mains on my lt1, every aluminum engine that I know of has individually sized mains from the factory...bore and journal are measured and then bearing is selected within .ooo5 of spec. Aftermarket usually just run all mains .oo1 under as the theory is a little looser vs 300,000 mile wear is better for race engines.

Do studs need to be lined bored? If the crank spins freely I”d say no. Thinking on this 8 bet the factory block ships with bottom end bolts untorqued...

Just checked and it comes with main bolts. So new clevite mains std size, 1 piston, I set file fit rings, 1 rod bolt stretch gauge, 1 rotary ring file, magnifying glass, Mark the rods to the side and journal. 3 hours to swap. If you build a turbo kit you can put this in no problem. Oh have to swap the piston squirteds

Also the hardest thing on this engine was the old fashion ring compressor that I used for the first two pistons, I got the new funnel type and literally pushed the piston in with my two thumbs! So yeah get that too.

Oldman's probably correct. Since the pistons are designed to drop-in, they should work in a new block. It would be easy enough to check just to be sure. I'm old achool and still haven't gotten accustomed to this new fangled drop-in business lol!

I would likely reuse the main bearings. I pulled one cap near the dropped valve and it still has the coating. I would also do main studs and might take the rotating assembly in to confirm it is balanced as well as it could be. My motor does have some scratches in the other bores that I do not think were related to the failed valve. Not sure when that happened. The rod bearing journals look like there are some scuff marks. It feels as smooth as can be.

I ordered my forged shortblock from gtrain with arp main studs. He said he's done a lot of lt1 blocks with the main studs and none of them needed line bored. I dont remember the specs he looks for but i do know i have arp main studs and my brand new lt1 block from gm was not line bored.

mine did not need line boring with ARP studs either
