It seems to me that, untuned, the slight hp gain up top is offset by the loss of torque, result is standoff on the dragstrip for my A8 car. Yes a tune could help, but it must be pointed out that a tune on a completely stock engine also gains 8~12hp and instead of losing torque, it gains some. Yes E85 helps, but I think you need to evaluate what each piece of the puzzle is doing when deciding what was worth the $$$$ and what wasn't. My feeling is, E85=worth it, MSD=not worth it. My perspective is from someone who is not planning to build this car into a 416 stroker with ported heads, a healthy cam, long tube headers, etc.

this seems a bit harsh.

the loss of power is only from 3700-4300 if you look at the chart. when drag racing you fly through this section of the rpms in about .2sec. the entire rest of the run is above 4800rpm. if I had control of the trans I would shift closer to 6500rpm which would mean the lowest rpm other than 1st gear would be above 5000rpm.

I am not saying it is a good bang for the buck and everyone should buy one but I am trying to put that tq loss into perspective. it is brief and you spend very little time at that rpm.

I think he was referencing TSloper's dyno chart (stock tune and gasoline) which I had mentioned to him, not yours. Indeed, that chart shows that torque is noticeably less through most of the range. It comes close at ~4500, falls off again, then finally catches up at ~5200rpm.

Resurrectinng this thread because I was looking at the same thing and other people might find useful the information. There is a person who put 470 whp with the folowing mods, on 93 gas:

Rotofab CAI
Nick Williams 103mm TB
MSD Manifold #2700
KOOKS 1 7/8 high-flow cats

The car was dyno tuned.

Assuming that there is a ~15% drivetrain loss, this would translate to ~560 hp to the crank. Here is the thread:

This thread was a long time ago and there is more info out now (we have learned some things). Check out Tick Performance's test in this forum (bolt on section) of an MSD intake manifold and 95tb on a stock LT1 motor with no tuning, they also share info on just the MSD manifold by itself. Shows that the unported MSD is about the same as stock in the low end, but starts gaining in the midrange and carries out better in the top end (does not fall as much after peak hp rpm).

As far as my own car's situation back then, it turns out that the stock TCM tune in my car was doing the 1-2 shift at only 5800 to 5900 rpm when I was using drag radials. Therefore it was not running in the area where the MSD works best. Now that I have tuning in my car's ECM and TCM, my SS is doing much better. In fact, it has run as well as 10.88 seconds in the standing 1/4 mile, using mild bolt-ons only, with a completely stock exhaust system. I am using the out-of-the-box MSD intake manifold with an unported 95tb.

After having drag raced the MSD on my bolton M6 SS and saw what people were doing with a ported stocker I plan to go Ported Stocker on my next LT1/LT1 or SS. And I like hat it looks stock. My opinion that is the way to go on a mild SS bolton plan. The MSD only makes sense to me if you are going all out bolton.

The msd will require a good tune to run faster than a ported stocker on a m6

Not many tunes out there that can do that on a m6

Port the stocker and you don’t need much change if anything to vve and timing curve.

a10 or converter cars are a different story
