2016 SS with ZL1 1LE Front End - Build Log

Hey everybody! I posted my car on the Camaro 6th Gen FB group and thought I'd follow up here for people to learn what I did.

I own a Camaro SS and have modified the car with ZL1 1LE front end parts.

In terms of "big name" parts this included the fascia, fenders, aero. Abez has his own thread with the PN's but:

Front Fascia (A1Z)

84280755 (84177343 old)

Fender

84291360 (84157562 old)

Fender

84291359 (84157561 old)

Grille (A1Z - upper)

84277490

Grille (A1Z - lower)

84222508

Hood (I skipped for now)

23483328

Hood Scoop (I skipped for now)

84335785

Front Splitter (A1Z)

84177344

Deflector PKG (OTR AIR)
Dive plane

23329726 (LH)
23329727 (RH)

Bezels for Fog/Dive

84277492 (LH)
84277493 (RH)

Rocker Panels (I skipped for now)

84177431 (LH)
84177432 (RH)

A few learnings:

1. The impact bar is the same between cars, but the shroud and foam that go over it is not to my understanding. The cover has attachment points to the fascia that do not match up if you leave the SS part.

2. Be careful with splitters and grilles - I ordered the ZL1 splitter which was 100% incorrect and had to get another.

3. The SS hood does not fit perfectly - but it's damn close. The feature lines are a little off but the more problematic area is the curvature of the hood itself. The SS hood is more sharp and angular around the "bend" where the ZL1/ZL1 1LE hood is more gradual.

-Interesting question: The AndersonComp CF ZL1-style hood is made for SS fitment but I have seen a few ZL1 1LE's on Instagram with it (check AC insta account). So I'm not sure if they have another fitment that works for these cars or what. Even their reps couldn't officially confirm.

4. Of course you will need wider front tires on anything below an SS 1LE. Right now I am rocking some 285/40/19 Apex ARC-8's. Great customer support from them. Love the wheels.

5. The "ZL1" badge on the lower grille is a part of the grille itself. I had no intention of badging my car that way but it was included so I'll have to find some way to file it off and refinish that section. Just another heads up. You'll also not be able to use a black or illuminated bowtie if you have one since the upper grille has the flowtie included.

6. The swap cost about $5000 with labor and paint, not counting wheels/tires. I would say you could the parts cheaper than I did and do everything for about $4000... but that depends how important the hood/rear spoiler/etc is to you. I'll be getting a new spoiler soon but probably not the ZL1 1LE style.

More pictures to come when it's not overcast out!

Fascinating to read and see how the hoods are actually different, albeit subtle.

Thank you for you sharing!

I like it! Let us know how you get rid of the ZL1 badge when you do.

Wheels are 19x10 +25mm from Apex. Any higher than 25mm offset on a 10" wheel will most likely not fit up front, you'll need a spacer.

I love the new look bro!
I was actually thinking of making mine a ZL1/1LE before I decided to go straight ZL1. I think I still can all I would need is the dive planes and the lower grille and splitter right? Which sort of lead me to this question; the ZL1 1LE lower grille can only match up to the ZL1 1LE splitter? Also I'm assuming the ZL1 front fascia is the same? Thanks!

I've heard talk that the ZL1 1LE fenders are the same as stock Camaro ones, they just use spacers. Does anyone know if this is true?

So doing this will allow the zl1 hood to fit the car? Since it doesn't fit stock ss and lt models?
