AFM Comes Through on a Road Trip

You hate the AFM until you make a road trip!!! My wife, other family members, and I took a last minute trip New Orleans to visit my daughter and her Fiancée. We took both Camaros and I almost got the same mpg's as my wife's RS that is in a manual. I kept it in D and 72 mph will keep the RPM's right under 2000. 75 mph put you right around 2000 RPM's or slightly above. It does the job when you need it to!!

I ran a trip 450 miles each way (900 total). Same route same speed no traffic jams at all. First 450 miles AFM on 23 MPG. Plugged in my programmer and bypassed AFM.......23 MPG. Go figure.

Man you did really good!!!.. I averaged right under 22.. My wife averaged 23.. I get poor gas mileage when I drive with the paddle shifters and I drive the SS like I stole it!! But it's amazing that we can get the same gas milage as a V6

I have a 06 Monte Carlo SS 5.3 V8 with AFM. I had it deleted and picked up about 3 miles a gallon?

yeah...not real sure about that. My LS3 can get 25-27mpg on the highway going 73mph for 3-4 hours. Firing on all 8.

You won't think that what little it saved you on fuel was worth it, after it takes the rings out of you engine, like it inevitably will.
I don't get it. Save a few pennies on fuel now, but have to spend thousands to buy a new engine later. Doesn't seem like a very good deal to me.

Is it the rings that go bad, or the lifters? I thought with the L76, the DoD lifters would go bad.

I didn't know about that. But I bought my 1SS in an auto not to save money, I didn't even know it had the AFM. I hope nobody buys a Camaro that is concerned about fuel economy. My wife asked to get it in an auto. But when we bought her RS, we bought it in a manual.. Marriage compromises!!

That is great!!! See I'm use to getting 13 mpg around town with the way I drive. So when I got almost 22.. I thought that was awesome!!

I use the Range AFM Delete on mine it doesn't make much difference that I can tell fuel wise but sure improves the cars driveability especially around town. I'm hoping my engine will last longer by actually "using" all 8 cylinders but I really don't know about that part?

I'm wondering if there has been any reliability issues with GM's AFM. Maybe Gen4 LS's haven't been around long enough. I bought a 2007 Yahoe with it and it still seems to be working fine. OTOH, Honda is settling a massive class action suit over theirs.
