I agree and disagree at the same time on this. While it is boring for the spectators, the drivers themselves are still dealing with the same things...

High speed driving that require quick reflects, pulling G's in the corners which is not easy on the body, going super fast with real consequences if something goes wrong.

They are still athletes, but from the spectator's view, it'd like watching someone play a video game.

I have a Cayman R, a Boxster Spyder and the 1LE and I track A LOT. My favorite by far is the Spyder with PDK, at Laguna it is still 2 full seconds faster than the 1LE. My ONLY gripe with the 1LE is the price of consumables and the depreciation. I bought the Spyder at the same time as the Camaro last year for about $2k more and it has gone up in value nearly $20k.

Fantastic stable: congrats! If i could buy a new Pcar for 2G over 1le id have one for my wife and one for myself
Looks like the original Spyder owner took a big bath on the car: their loss your gain! What laptimes do you get in it at Laguna? Thanks!

I'm a simple man and want nothing more than a 2010-era GT3 in Riviera Blue.

Please...?!

He didn't take a bath, values have just climbed on the Spyder! As far as lap times I can run consistent 1:40-1:41 in the Spyder, and high 1:43-1:44 in the 1LE. The biggest difference is the 1LE is hanging on the edge at 10/10ths ie a curb to curb slide on every turn, so not much more to gain except by tires. The Spyder doesn't let you know you are at the edge, so hard to go all out and ball up a $65k car lol.

Sorry, i had assumed it was a 2016 Spyder, which seemed a ton of money brand new, so getting it at a price of a 1le (when one yr old?) seemed like an absolute bargain. But thats proly not the car we are talking about just my assumptions getting things mixed up in my head lol!

NB a stock ss 1le will do 37s in pro hands (Dandy Randy) at 10/10th and 39s in amateur hands as recorded by Seanblurr in a bit of traffic (per best laps recorded on the Forum). Just an fyi in terms of what the car is capable of. Cheers!

Am I the only one here who likes 997 era cars better than 991?

Had the chance to drive a 2018 911 at Daytona for the weekend a couple of weeks ago...

I was expecting more relative to my $45k car.

Leather was nice. Pirelli PZero's are garbage tire.

Nope.

But I'm also of the opinion that Porsche has turned in to a Collector Car manufacturer pumping out special editions so fat rich old men can brag about their garages that they never drive. Guess that's how they decided to stay relevant after they started selling more SUVs than sports cars, but the 993-era air-cooled cars are the end of the great Porsche driver's cars imo. The new ones sure are technically competent, but they aren't nearly as enjoyable to drive.

I'm from a family of Porsche nuts. In the family we have: '71 911 RS clone hot rod, '90 964 track prepped, recently sold 997S track prepped, recently sold GT4, plus 3 Cayennes.

I firmly beleive that 997's will be regarded as fondly as 993's. The 997 is such a awesome mix of old school 911 feel, but modern conviniences and driveablilty.

As someone who tracks an air-cooled 911 a lot, and have a ton of track time in a 997, I disagree. Yes, the air-cooled cars summon a different level of driver involvment and driver skill. However, the 997 still scratches that same itch, in a little different way. Both are absolutely amazing cars to drive, and you can see the family relationship when you wheel them.

Also, I've been at Mid Ohio when there were 3 997 GT3 RS 4.0's attending the same event. That is a special edition worth stupid $$, but the owners used them as intended. I just rode in a 991.2 GT2 RS on track last weekend. Yeah, you'll have some gold chain/status symbol buyers that tuck them away in garages, but a ton of buyers still use them as intended.

I would agree that when Porsche forced PDK upon GT3 buyers in 2014, that did take away from the driver involvment and enjoyablity. Thankfully they've brought back the manual trans for new GT3's.

Oh, and I LOVE my Cayenne. I'm just fine with Porsche selling a bunch of SUV's.... so long as that means they can continue to devleolp naturally aspirated flat 6's that spin to 9,000 RPM and make 125hp per liter.

They've made them too safe, starting with the 996. They're too easy to drive, too accessible (see: gold chain set) and there are too many special edition models collecting headlines to be taken seriously. The real issue I have, though; is with the ease of use. The electronics have just made everything too easy, anyone can get in one and go fast and that just isn't very special anymore.

I think we both know the ratio is about 20:1 there with a strong favor going towards those who store them. That's why Porsche Scottsdale has a 996 GT3 RS 4.0 for $500K...

They brought back the manual trans... with a whole host of driver aids and computer trickery (rear wheel steering, etc) to make them incredibly easy to drive fast and remove the involvement.

Well, I predict we won't see more than one generation of NA (non-electric) 911s but that is a nice side effect isn't it? Except it's kind of more of an excuse these days, and we can see where the focus has gone... but I can't begrudge them for staying relevant in a changing market. It doesn't change the fact that I prefer the involvement of the 993 over the much safer and more muted water cooled cars even as capable as they are.
