Top down oil change
So finally looking to do my own oil changes for my 2010 v6. I do not own any jack stands so I’ve been considering the top down approach that I’ve heard of people using an oil extractor to suck out the oil through the dipstick. I only think this is a viable option because the oil filter on the v6 is easily accessible from the top of the engine bay. What is your experience with this method?

Why not just find a cheap set of ramps and use those? Probably easier and cheaper than buying what you need for the extraction.
If I remember correctly, the drain plug wasn't even that far back on the v6, probably could reach it easily even without jacking the car up

Aren’t harbor freight jacks a death sentence? I’ve heard very skeptical things about their reliability.

I’ve been changing my own oil for almost 50 years. I have NEVER heard of sucking it thru the dipstick. Gravity is your friend. Drain it.

With this method you really aren't getting all of the crap that settles to the bottom of the pan.
I prefer to drain from the lowest point on the engine, the oil pan.

Have any friends that can help? All you need is an OEM scissor jack and ONE stand. Jack car up at right forward pinch weld, lower onto stand, pull drain plug (pass side). 6-qt, so have a good size drain pan. Lower car and let drain. Reverse to reassemble.

It's something that's really only done on transmissions afaik, it's pretty convenient but it leaves more fluid in the pan vs draining it the traditional way.

Use a couple of cut up 2x10's or 2x12's. Lay 1 longer one down then another on top of it about 10" back. So that it pulls up on the 1st board, then the second. If you want it level, do the same to the back.

You'd be surprised how many shops suck the oil out of the dip stick. Certainly not a good way to change the oil. I bought plastic ramps from walmart for like 39 bucks, it literally takes less than a 1/2 hr to do it right on the ramps. Drive it up, pull the plug let it drain. While its draining pull the filter from above. Put plug back in, toss in your oil and away you go.

One might be able to fill the gas tank using fuel lines near the engine too. Just in case you have some extra time on your hands after sucking the oil out thru the dipstick.
