JRE Differential Billet Caps???

Installing my new 3.91 gear set along with Detroit truetrac and LPW cover and bmr bushings and I am ordering the JRE billet caps as well. Has anybody had any experince with the caps when installing them do they line right up or is there any clearance issues or modifications that I have to make prior to installation? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Caps are overkill if you have the LPW cover.

The caps, if you use them, need machining to match your carrier.

I have the LPW and TrueTrac with the Hendrix offset bushings but not the caps - based on the feedback that the caps would be overkill with the LPW...

My build thread shows my install (around page 63)

Just did mine...

Thanks a lot for your input on this! That's what I was thinking as I had read the LPW was already made to help support the caps. Probably gonna go with the Hendrix bushings instead of bmr there's the left over funds from not buying the diff caps Cant wait to get everything put on!

Hello and thank you for your interest in JRE billet caps.

They are a small investment that can prevent a failure that we have seen over and over again.

The factory caps are Cast aluminum and tend to be soft, we often find the bore stretched out especially on the ring gear side.

We have even seen caps broken in 1/2.

The lower the gear ratio the more load that is applied to the bearing caps.

The cover is a good upgrade but not the fix all for the real problem weak caps.

Any questions please ask.

Ted.

I'm all for more insurance to keep my car running with what I put it through. But what type of machining is needed for the caps?

They will come with instructions.

Simply bolt them on the bare housing, Torque to spec, Measure bore, say they measure 3.096, subtract 3.062, machine 0.034 from cap legs, install caps torque verify bore diameter of 3.062 + or - 0.001

Thank you for considering JRE.

Ted.

Thanks for the help on clarifying the installation of these JRE caps I went ahead and ordered these to go along with the rest of my differential setup.

That is not at all what the downloadable instruction say on your website which I downloaded today.

Here they are if anyone wants to see them:
https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j...,d.amc&cad=rja

The instruction state to measure and subtract 3.062". Then the instructions state that after milling that amount, the bore will measure 3.060". It's impossible to end up at 3.060" if you milled off the difference between the original bore and 3.062" (obviously). So, which one is it? The instructions also don't mention anything about +/-0.001".

I guess everything is subject to interpretation, and I was typing from memory, I will edit my post accordingly

I did say instructions are included with the caps

I assure you it will all make sense when you are actually doing the job.

As I said earlier when you bolt the new cap on and measure the bore you will be much larger the 3.062 typically 3.100 to 3.150.

So let us say you got 3.150, you will take 3.150 - 3.062 = 0.088 to be milled off the caps.

I hope this clears things up for you.

Ted.

Maybe you should just state what the finished bore diameter should be. Your example above will give you 3.062" and the instructions state that the diameter needs to be 3.060".

Thank you for bringing this to my attention after looking over the instructions more carefully there was in fact a typo, so we just corrected it.

The correct final bore diameter is 3.062 + or - 0.001

You can download the new version in a few minutes

Ted.

Maybe you should realize Ted admitted his mistake and clarified, and he always has awesome support and helps the Camaro5 community the best he can, and if your still unsure yourself you should get a professional to do it for you.
