What Is The Optimal RPM To Shift?

Saw a video or read a post, where there is a way to calculate hp/tq for each gear by looking at a dyno, gear ratios and a bunch of other fancy stuff to figure out the best RPM to shift.

Does anyone know what it is for our cars for peek power in each gear?

While we are on the subject, at what RPM do you guys shift for the best fuel mileage? I haven't tried it because that doesn't sound fun at all.

For best fuel mileage its simple, get the car into your highest gear as soon as possible. For max power , shift as close to redline as possible with out hitting the rev limiter.

redline...the power doesn’t seem to drop off even at redline (6500rpm). I will hit the rpm cut off occasionally on track because the power continues even at 6500.

The rev limiter activates at 6600 RPM for the ZL1 LT4.

You can put the performance display up in your HUD by pressing the [Info] switch on the lower dash to the left of your steering wheel until it comes up. This gives you a horizontal tachometer, a G-meter, and activates the "shift lights". I like to watch the tach in my near peripheral vision when I'm at the drag strip instead of the shift lights. I try to shift just before or right at 6600 RPM. I always seem to short-shift when I use the shift lights. You'll only see them when you get into high RPM ranges. They change from yellow to red as the RPM increases and start blinking when you get close to red-line.

Here's an excerpt from the 2017 Camaro Owner's manual page 133:

Performance View: This display gives the speedometer reading, rpm reading, transmission positions (for automatic transmission vehicles only), Shift Timing Light Position, and lateral acceleration (G) indicators. The radio, CD, navigation, and phone information do not appear in Performance view. The shift timing lights at the top of the display will appear with increases in engine rpm. The rows of lights get closer together as the shift point gets closer. Shift the transmission before the lights come together in the display. Shift immediately if the lights are flashing. See Manual Mode => 227 or Manual Transmission => 229

The redline is 6500 rpm, if you truly try and speed shift at 6500 rpm, you usually hit the 6600 rpm fuel shut off. A good swift speed shift has to be done before 6500 rpm because by the time you see 6500 rpm, its too late to shift without hitting the rev limiter . The fuel shut off/rev limiter is so suttle, it not abrupt. If your car still pulls at 6500 rpm, its possible the redline was raised, most tuners do that without even telling you.

exactly....even with the rpm lights blinking, I sometimes miss the shift timing. The A10 rolls through the gears soooo fast.

I was referring to a 6 speed manual. The A10 from what I have seen cannot be manipulated to shift beyond redline can it? The A10 usually short shifts well before redline in the first 3 shifts and then gets closer to redline shifts 4,5 and 6 etc.

If I had a A10, the shift points would have to be tuned and modified so each and every shift is at 6500 rpm when your foot is pinned to the floor.

in “M” mode the car will allow a shift past redline and an unfortunate hiccup before the fool behind the wheel decides to depress the paddle.

First part is actually false my friend. throttle is more important for fuel economy. If you shift way early you actually use more fuel

Garbage. Shift up as early as possible and use the least throttle possible for max MPG. The only possible exception to this may be when going up hill.

Engine RPM I feel is more mileage sensitive than throttle position. Light throttle and low RPM for best economy
