Whipple Flex Fuel Dyno Results....Meh

Just got my car dialed in by Jannetty Racing. Ted did an awesome job fixing the previous tune that was put on my car. I wanted to put it on the dyno today to see where I was at. I must say I am a little disappointed with the numbers. All 3 pulls were done in 4th gear. I am not sure how much I would have gained if they were done in 6th, if any at all. I was hoping someone could chime in. I was hoping to be in the 6's with everything I have done. Car has the following mods:

Whipple w/ 3.625 pulley @ 8lbs
Jannetty Racing flex fuel tune.....e58
Kooks LT headers
MBRP race exhaust
Rotofab CAI
Ported throttle body
LT4 injectors
LT4 hpfp
DSX aux pump

Well you’re making ZL1 power with 1-2psi less boost. Jannetty isn’t in CA are they? No disrespect to them but I think it would be best to have the tune done in person. Ship the car to them or look into a reputable tuner that’s local to you.

And I hope that A/F is not accurate. If so it looks lean. Of it were my car I’d want to verify that while driving under real load (not on a dyno).

Btw I’m not suggesting that 561rwhp is something to be ashamed of. I just thought that with my build I would see 600+. Comparatively, other people have had better results with similar builds. Whipple even claims 585rwhp on 91 with a stock car. Just one of those things where you spend $12k and hope for a number and come up short.

I would have went to Ryne or Rick. I hear good stuff about Ted and no disrespect to him, you keep spending money and coming up short.

well that is your problem...4th gear is going to show 50whp less HP easily. I know for fact dynoing in 5th is 25whp less then 6th. Never heard of anybody dynoing a A8 in 4th so I am speculation the difference, but again I would not be surprised if it's 50hp less.

First off Dyno readings vary throughout the country.

Second Did you log on the dyno, I would expect low air flow in the dyno room made High IAT readings and timing is pulled to protect the engine.

Third Dyno testing in 4th gear kills the numbers you must dyno in 6th gear.

This car has a wide band in the correct location that shows AFR is correct.

AFR in the logs shows Lambda .82 commanded and Lambda .82 achieved Customer can verify.

This is how bad tail pipe sensors can be, and the very reason why we don't use them or rely on them.

We tune for reliability not glory numbers.

Ted.

I have never heard of anyone running an a8 in 4th, but it would make sense that your HP numbers would be off.

We had this discussion earlier this year and Pray told us that he generally sees 20-25hp difference when running in 5th instead of 6th (I would imagine 4th would equally impact numbers). If that weren't the case, why wouldn't everyone just dyno in 1st gear?

If I were in your shoes, I would do one of two things:
1. get to a track and see your trap speed (that's the best way to see the power)
2. Find another dyno and confirm ahead of time that you can run in 6th gear.

Either of these options will let you know where you really are in terms of power. Then you will have information to make an educated decision. BTW - You don't have any codes do you?

On the dyno when my TPM's weren't programmed, we lost 100rwhp...just because the car had a code...we couldn't see anything in the logs that told us why the power was missing. We did the sync for TPM and BAM the power returned.

Appreciate the responses. I am learning as I go here. No codes were present. Like I said, the butt dyno is fantastic and the car is night/day better than the original tune. I think a 6th gear pull and lower temps would’ve made the difference. I drove the car 20 miles to get to the dyno. It sat for 20 mins before they put it on and it was hot as hell in the room. At the end of the day it’s just a number.

I called that one a pull after a nice hot soak will be pretty disappointing but on the other hand doing what it is suppose to protecting the engine.

4th for the M6, but for any car try and choose the 1:1 drive ratio or as close as available.

This may a dumb question, but why do some dyno shops use 5th gear in an A8? Are there certain dynos that cannot get accurate readings at a 1:1 ratio?
