1LE rock chips
I know this subject has been discussed in many previous threads but how effective are the gm splash guards in protecting from rock chips. I have a SS 1LE on order equipped with them. From what I read rock chips are a huge problem due to the wide sticky tires...should I just budget in xpel as part of the cost of the car? Any advice is appreciated

Im 100% serious, this is what will protect your car. Other types are too short or narrow in trade for some looks. I have these on my car and it made a huge difference. ZL1 addon's are lacking. look nice, but severely lacking. and films are only so good.

I installed ACS Composites rock guards on my 1LE and was unimpressed with the coverage, which is said to be superior to the GM Accessories splash guards. I ultimately removed them and have decided to instead limit my paint protection to Xpel Ultimate Plus. It is a necessary expense if you care about preserving your paint, IMO. I had it installed on everything from the a-pillar forward, the mirror housings, the full length of the rocker panels/the bottom of the doors, and behind the rear wheels. Cost was $2,500.

Swapping out the Goodyears just about eliminates the rocks being thrown at your quarters.
I would hear pebbles bouncing off the car backing out of the driveway, since swapping out tires I almost never hear a stone fly up. Unfortunately my paint back there is wasted. Knowing that now, it's the first thing I would have done.

The GM ones do next to nothing.. and the little strip GM put on there is too low. I just ordered some 3M PPF to wrap the area below the body split in front of the wheel that gets all the chips. I got a piece 18" wide and 4' long... figure that will be enough to do both sides and a little to play with. It should be here during the week and we'll see how it comes out. I figured for $70 it was worth a shot.

Xpel Ultimate all the way, I have the entire front end, quarters, doors, rockers, splitter and mirrors and I have absolutely no rock chips after almost two years
And it looks great, glossier, self healing but expensive |

The area that gets most of the abuse is rear quarter panels just *before* the wheels. From the door to the wheels. Especially if you track your car.
I would *double* expel both sides generously and call it quits. I had done tons more on my 17, but frankly would not do it again. Side skirts apparently help quite a bit as well. That's what i am getting for my 2020 (from ACS). Enjoy your car! Cheers! Ps Agree that zl1addons flaps make no difference imo. Had them on my 17. |

i started out with no rock/splash guards on my 20 and it was depressing fixing chips on a car that was less than a month old. i got the gm splash guards and they work but id say they are just big enuf to do the job. i don't get any chips anymore so im happy but they could be bigger. i think somebody on here did a mod where he put a cheap universal flap inside the gm one to block it all but do a search for that.

I installed the ZL1 Addons splash guards and took the GY3s off for PS4Ss. The factory set up was sandblasting my rockers and quarters. Where I live in PA. the roads are shit and always covered with silt and stones all summer. The swap made a difference but ocassionally, I still get a few random ones. Its the wide tires mostly.

Xpel paint protection. For me it was mandatory. I figured into the price of the car. Especially on Michigan roads.

The road conditions must be a huge factor. I'm 85% on the interstate, my other roads seem to be clean. I really don't have any chips. I really haven't noticed any after 3 tracknights... maybe i'm not looking good enough!

The GM splash guards are better than nothing - no one will argue that. It was the first mod I did on the car with less than 200 total miles. The second mod was to go to the local XPEL installer and get the PPF installed in front of the rear wheels, right up to the body seam.
2 years and 6200 miles later, the PPF has marks and a few holes that surely would have been paint chips otherwise. The mud flap type guards offer more protection than the GM molded guards. But for me, the GM pre-painted guards have more of a factory look, so I preferred that to the extra protection the mud flap type guards offer. The rear wheel GM guards do an excellent job. There are no chips on mine behind the rear wheels.
