04-06 Pontiac GTO's were notorious for not deploying the air bags from frontal impacts of any speed. My niece was just recently involved in a side impact and her little Fiat didn't deploy ANY airbags. The impact was just like how the IHS test's all vehicles and yet no airbags......

Its sad that this type of impact doesn't result in airbag deployments and GM will do nothing about it but yet if our cars cross over a section of a road course while racing for a fast time, it'll deploy the side airbags and GM will say that it's designed to do that because your car raised to 1.5 degree's of an angle.

But judging on the impact and it was from the side as both vehicles were traveling in the same direction, I guess the NHSTA/IHS do not feel like those impacts should have a airbag deployment.

Gotta love the dependability of takata air bags. Had the bags gone off the driver might have been blasted with shrapnel.

There are sensors strategically placed around the car to trigger the airbags. And that can mean only triggering the front airbag or airbags (depending on if the passenger one was "turned on" or not) or the side airbags or both. This accident must have just missed them and I would be glad that they didn't deploy given the amount of damage they cause which really adds on to the repair bill and time. Also, they may have purposely not gone off due to the way you were hit. Sometimes the airbags deploying can do more harm than good and they've gotten pretty good at programming the system to provide the best protection for the occupants.

OP, I'm extremely sorry to see this and hear your story. You lived to tell it and to see the car on the trailer, however, which is what matters the most.

I also think this was a freak hit that just dodged the side airbag sensor and obviously didn't activate the frontal one. Indeed, it feels that there should probably be another side sensor, maybe behind the fenders, but I'm not an expert.

This is an absolutely beautiful car. I understand she is your forever Camaro, and hope the body shop steps up to the plate and repairs her to a perfect condition. Mine had worse damage and was fixed to look and drive even better than new after my mess-up last March, so it's quite possible, I honestly hope you can keep and enjoy it.

Appreciate all the well wishes.Talked to the body shop and one of the first things he said is its amazing the airbags didnt go off. He also said its going to be very close to totaled. There is some substantial sub frame damage going all the way to the frame and into engine. He cant see the extent until its torn down. The hood wont budge so he cant tell if the strut tower mount is damaged. Thats a big one if it is. I was also advised I will need an attorney for depreciated value and I should go get checked out but damn I hate hospitals. More so with Covid going on. Anyway I feel good about the shop it's at so either way.

Not everything happens "for a reason" like that quote is trying to say. Sometimes, actually, most of the time, things just "happen".

Well, technically, things do happen for a reason, but not the reasons for which the quote is famous (i.e. to make something good happen later or to prevent something worse from happening later). Car crashes definitely happen for a reason - and that reason is often people aren't paying attention, being careless, on their phone, driving too fast/stupid, drunk, or for a long list of real reasons.

Per the code data written in the sensor suite, her car hit you, not you hitting her. Ergo, no airbags.

Appears to be a "fender" collision. Therefore, the airbags wouldn't deploy as I don't believe they are sensors behind the fenders.

I know you're bummed as I've been there. The important thing is that you weren't hurt more seriously. The car can be replaced, you can't. You'll forget about her when you find your next one. As for the repair, with all that damage, I wouldn't want her back. I'd be hoping for a total. Good luck and stay positive!

Not sure what the bag system does now but they use to fire when 2 of the 3 sensors in the bumper were tripped. Usually a crash like that would not set 2 of them off
