Finally got to the track for the first time...

The track was the typical Friday night slop prep. DA was damn good at -309' but there was a steady 10-12 mph head wind which sucked. I was plagued with wheel hop the whole night. Car is a bone stock 16' 2SS, A8 on the stock GY Run flats.

I ran in Track Mode, TC off, Stabilitrac on, launching off of a dead idle, foot to the floor.

My best was the first pass right off the street. 12.37@114. I had some wheel hop as soon as the power came in in 1st gear, I peddled it and the trans short shifted to 2nd but I rode it out figuring it's just the first pass anyway.

Well it turned out to be the best pass as the others all wheel hopped. I did have one clean pass that did not wheel hop but the red light was lit on my lane before we started and they wouldn't reset it. So I ran it anyway to grudge race a friend in a 5.0 Fox and it was a 13.6 with a 3.3 60'. Lol.

Not a successful night for me. I will not run the car again on stock tires...it's a miracle it didn't break as bad as it hopped before I could abort the runs.

I have no doubts this car will go 12.20s if not some high teens on a good clean pass and less wind. I'm sure it's a 115 mph car with no wind and no chopping of the throttle.

Maybe I'll try it again next Fall when I get some drag radials for it.

Still sounds like a lot of fun! Good first pass! How did you fare against any other Camaro's out to play?

I had bad wheel hop issue with my Corvette that was cured by a new set of NITTO 555 tires which are relatively cheap but not run flats.

Not any other Camaros but I did race my friend's son in his Fox 5.0. He went 12.17@114. We would have been a great race if I could have hooked and not hopped.

I agree, it needs some good hooking DRs. I'd have to get some spare wheels for them. Not sure I'll buy a set anytime soon but...This is my wife's car so I want race it much. I just wanted to try to get a good number on it but, no luck on these tires.

I won't be putting run flats back on it for sure. They ride like crap, don't have any straight line traction and they wear out fast in normal use.

I had the same experience as you, could only muster a 12.2 and the car felt like an elephant on ice skates. A DR setup is a little pricey but you will have piece of mind not hitting the wall or crossing the lane, plus you can let it all hang out.....and they do have resale value if you decide to unload them.

My NITTO 555 were not drag radials they were street tires. No more wheel hop and very good traction.

You may be on to something with the Nitto 555s. Looks like they have a 555G2 out nownthats getting good reviews and half the cost of the run craps. Best of all is they offer them in the correct size for the 6G.

I have the 555G2 and they hook better than the OEM tires in my experience.

nice run on that first pass. Low 12s at around 115 is right on par for stock A8s, no?

I've never had wheel hop ever with mine. It hooked on the very first pass. Did you do a water burn out or drive around. Our track was prepped decently on my first weekend out last March. Da was about 500 and my first pass was a 12.04 but it never improved from that point bone stock with 1900 miles. Tell us about your burn out and staging procedure. Stability track should have been off also. I rolled into the water, track mode, everything off. Put it in the manual mode, foot on brake, start to smoke the tires in 1st, shift to 2nd and RPMs to about 4500 and then shift to 3rd keeping your R's about 4500 and as the tires are smoking let off your brakes and let your rpms come down and roll out of the water you'll start to feel it hook. Slowly move to the line and turn the top yellow on, make sure you put it back in drive (I didn't once and it sucked). Turn on the bottom yellow and leave right off idle as you did when you see the bottom yellow light. I'm betting your 60' and ets will improve next time. Negative DA is a drag racers dream. I have 48 years of drag racing experience, so just trying to help.

I drive around the water, back into it and do a quick spin to get the tires wet, then pull up a bit and start the burn out. I burn out 1st to about 6k, shift to 2nd and spin up to 4500 or so, by then, I have decent smoke off both tires and I let off the brake and back out of the gas and let it spin forward until it chirps. Shallow stage into the second beam, foot to the floor on the last amber.

The wheel hop begins as soon as the power comes on in 1st. It did this on 3 out of 4 passes, however on the 12.37 pass, I got out of it and back on it and it stopped hopping, however the trans short shifted to 2nd when I backed off the throttle. Two other passes wheel hopped the same way.

Only one pass did it hook clean and not spin/hop and that one had a clock malfunction.

Now my wife is telling me she is hearing some noise coming from the rear end so....I'm not sure it if hurt something or what but...I guess I'll be investigating that now.

A damn shame a stock 12 sec car can hurt a rear end on stock tires.

Btw I've been drag racing 25 years and I currently own two mid 10 sec corvettes and recently sold a 9.20 C5Z, I also have an 8.60 turbo Busa and a 9.30 S1000rr so....I've got a few passes under my belt.

Take it to your dealer, there is a bulletin on the rear diff. Mine made noise when turning and they changed the fluid and I haven't had that problem since. I believe that had some contaminated fluid or something like that. Its free so make sure you do that. You and I are on the same page, maybe that track was not prepped as ours always is. Get some slicks or drag radials and you'll be good to go. So we have both been in the 9's not many can say that, I had a 68 nova small block with a glide, 9.70@136, real light car and 364 cube, alky carbed and 8900 rpm shifts with a 6.17 gear. It was on the limiter at 1200 ft, not really a quarter mile car but ran 6.30's 1/8 mile. Might need some BMR lowers on the rear to solve some of that. I bet a lot of it is the track prep. Bad ass vet you have also, gotta love the power of the LS and LT motors, they love the Juice and the Boost. Gimme some more of that.

Right on man, I'll check it out about the bulletin on the rear diff fluid level. I actually just changed the rear diff oil in my C7Z with 2k miles on it and it was 1 qt low.

The noise sounds a bit like a "growl" and only seems to do it around turns at low speeds, however it definitely never did it before the track trip. We have 10k miles on it and know every noise it makes so this is definitely new. The car was wheel hopping bad, I kept aborting passes, finally the last pass it hopped and I stayed in it a little longer to see if it would line out and it didn't so I peddled it and got back in it. I normally never stay in it if it was hoppping but, after a 2hr wait to make a pass, I was pissed when it acted up again. Maybe it fragged the posi unit or something. It doesn't make the sound all the time but, definitely heard it 3-4 times in the same day so...

Damn your Nova was a screamer! 8900, that's how they used to do it in the Comp Eliminator days. 10k-11k was the norm back in the day.

Here is my C5Z... I just recently sold it to buy a C7Z but...the C5Z was fun WHEN it ran..
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mb2osxKzMNs&app=m

No more FAST cars for me. I don't have time/money to keep them going.

Thanks for the help/info!
