who can help me with the removal of the rear deck lid to get at the rear speakers so i can change them??

Just remove the covers using a flat head. However, use EXTREME CAUTION that you do NOT scrape the plastic....that stuff gets scratches like NO ones business. Should be 4 clips that hold it in like the front speaker. Note: I have not removed the rear covers over the speakers...only the front center channel. But, it's GOT to be the same.

So TAG, you're saying you can gain access to the speakers w/out removing the door panel or the rear deck? That would be sweet! 8)

rear deck is quite a pain in the A$$. the back seat bottom, both side pieces by the rear windows, lower pieces for the rear armrests, and then the back deck come off. you almost have to use a prybar to get the clips to let go on the rear deck, chevy made these a SOB to get loose. Ill see if i have a few pics with the car i did apart.

I actually replaced the rear speakers with JL Audio 6 x 9 coax speakers. Do not try to short cut this process.

1. Remove the rear seat cushion.
2. Remove the rear seat back
3. Remove the plastic trim rocker panels
4. Remove the rear side trim pieces, be careful the air bags are underneath.
5. Remove the rear side panels (large)
6. From the trunk side, loosen the clips holding the rear parcel tray.
7. Remove the side felt carpeting that wraps around the body
8. Remove the trim buttons that hold the parcel tray and careful work the parcel tray off the body, you may have to get you hand under the plastic to snap it away from the metal body. This is a big pain!
9. This will expose the speakers which now come out easily.
10. Be sure to find speakers that fit the very unique mounting style of the rear body mounting area.

The process will take about 4 hours in and out.

How can one tell if the speakers will fit? This is not something I want to find out after I have disassembled half the car with steps 1 thru 9. I looked under the rear deck and saw the speaker has a slip-on bracket on one side and a screw on the other. I assumed this bracket could be removed from the speaker and attached to the new 6x9. I already ordered some Alpine Type-R replacements for the doors and rear deck. Will I need to buy an adapter or what?

Not that this needs updating... but just installed new 6x9s in the rear. Took aprox 2hrs. And no, it isnt easy or simple...

BUT, old $5 Radio Shack speakers are better than the ones that are stock. No brainer to replace the rest of them.
