Oil weight question

Hey guys, my supplier wants me to try Amsoil 10w30 for when I hit the track, what do you think.

Is your supplier going to pay for your engine when you grenade it? Have you got turbos in this engine or is it stock? 5W/30 is what you should be running, anything heavier and you will cause damage to the engine.

The operating range of 5w and 10w oils are so similar the difference won't do or cause anything much less damage the engine.

You really should do your research before you post such crap as this.

10W is safe to -18 celsius, for colder conditions the 5W is recommended. That is about the only difference.

That switch is fine. Ignore the one comment, if you even drive the car in the winter, just give it time to warm up before getting into it.

Thanks guys but I also want to make sure the oil pump isn't going to fail faster since these cars have huge oil pump issues. I seem lucky so far. Also after reading other reviews on other forums it seems like 5w is just for colder startups but over time the 5w-30 and 10w-30 has the same hot temperature results in terms of viscosity. I thought 10-w30 had a higher viscosity at extreme temps for better protection.

That's correct. The first number is the cold start viscosity rating. 5w oil is good til -22 degrees F and 10w oil is good til -4 degrees F. The operating viscosity of both oils is the same. So it doesn't matter which grade oil you choose, both of them will perform the same on the track.

What about Amsoil Dominator 10w-30 full synthetic. Recommends 3000 mile oil changes which I do anyway.

I posted this in a different thread but no answer...

Can too thick an oil vis. cause an over-pressure input to output on standard media filters creating the situation that will cause the bypass spring in the filter to stay "on" and allow filter bypass condition most of the time? Like a clogged filter?

Not sure on the dominator oil, I run Z-rod and it is a 10-30 synthetic, with a great additive package. It has a high zinc content, that is outstanding for wear protection especially in cammed cars. It also has corrosion protection, that protects the engine while in storage. I believe it has more detergents, than the oil you mentioned above. Do a little research on the two, there is lots of info out there.

Reaaaaallly low detergents. I wouldnt do 3000 with track days. I change after every track weekend.

Dominator pissed me off from get go because its dyed red....i have a pet peeve about dyed fluids. Good oil tho...better for track. I used it last summer for some extremely hot track days.

Still a fan of zrod for all other times/situations.

I run 10W-30 in mine. It isn't run in the winter anyway so it really doesn't matter. I like a little heavier oil for the cold start with the cam. Not a fan of Amsoil, though. There are plenty of better choices out there.
