Grinding 2nd?

My wife is 100 miles into her 2SS

She was telling me yesterday on 2 occasions when shifting from 1st to 2nd it grinded when she let the clutch out.

My wife is no idiot and she knows how to drive a manual, she swears both times she was fully in gear when it happened and it only happened on harder acceleration and she was over 20MPH.

I tried to recreate it last night to get an idea of what was happening but of coarse no grinding for me.

Any ideas about this?????

Sorry, at this point I'd have to say operator error ... Also if it were hard acceleration, she should be north of 40-45 mph ...

I just threw in the over 20 to throw out the possibility of the skip shift causing something.

I'm figuring user error also, but want to throw it out there just in case

In her defense, I don't think is user error. I have had the same thing happen and it is only on hard acceleration. Quite embarrassing. There is actually older threads on here about the same issue.

I have to agree it isn't operator error. I had the same issue with my 2SS. I have yet to have the problem on my GT500 but I have read many a thread about it happening. So I am just knocking on wood for now.

There is a fix that seems to eliminate most but not all of the problem. I honestly can't remember what they are called. They basically are a rod on each side of the transmission that are connected to the undercarriage to keep the tranny in place during hard acceleration.

Hopefully someone else knows what I'm talking about. I'll try and find a link when I'm in front of my computer again.

I'd love to know about the root cause too...

If I didn't experience it myself on a routine basis, I'd lean towards operator error too, but 2nd does a very quick grind or very rough shift regularly on me as well. First couple of times I thought it was just bad timing with skipshift locking out 2nd at the same time I was trying to shift... but I've since added the eliminator, and still have the same thing happen occasionally.

No other gear does it, and I've been driving stick for 15 years now.

She just told me it did it again, said it grinded with the pedal to the floor and all 3 times were when it was cold.

I guess this isn't something that will go away as its broken in

Happens to me when I am really getting on it. I cant just let off, jam the clutch to the floor and pull it back into 2nd. I just doesnt go in. Its like it is hitting a gate. Never had this problem in other cars. I have to shift deliberatly slower to ensure that it goes into second. Happened with the stock shifter, and the Hurst I have on it also. So I dont think its a shifter issue.

The manual transmission has a "gas saving" feature to where if your transmission and engine are warm enough you can go from 1st to 4th gear to save gas. Maybe this is the root cause? I've noticed a "gate" feel going from 1st to 2nd sometimes as well and just figured it was this.

That is what I was thinking too! If your hitting the 1-4 skip shif and not noticing it that would keep you from being able to get it in gear. Skip shift eliminator is like $30

Skip shift only comes into play at 30% throttle or something like that from 1700-2500rpm (those numbers are wrong but it's definitely not WOT @ redline).

Since this also occurs on the GT500's with Tremec's I doubt it has much to do with the skip shift gating.

Is the part that helps the mustang.

Also, some GT500 owners have reported that changing out the synchros has helped. I can't remember if any Camaro owners did that under warranty. I want to say yes.

Same thing happened to me the other day when I was taking someone for a ride and doing a 0-60 run. Embarrassed the hell out of me, couldn't figure out why I missed the shift........maybe I didn't miss it. Pissed me off though.
