Low RPM belt squeak / chirp ?
I have a 2SS, Manual Trans and every time I start moving the car from a stop, I get a pretty audible chirp or belt squeak that lasts for just a split second, but it is clearly audible. If I start moving with more than 1500 RPM of throttle, it never makes the sound. I really only hear it between 800 RPM and 1100 RPM when just creeping slowly.
I also always hear it at idle from a completely cold start, but rarely at idle when warm. Sometimes when I give it just a bit of gas (moving the RPMs from idle 600-800 to 1200 sometimes gives a squeak.) Just curious if this is something I can fix myself or if I need to take it in. It's kind of embarrassing to start moving when other people are around because the car just squeaks like a mouse! Last edited by alaskajoel; 04-26-2016 at 06:10 PM. |

Sounds like a pulley bearing. Most likely the tensioner pulley...

I will try and take it in next weekend. Fortunately I don't live in Alaska any more, and my KY dealer is just a couple miles away.
I would be interested to hear if anyone else has a similar problem. It's audible with the windows up, but really obvious with the windows down. The vehicle I test drove didn't have the problem, and I don't remember my car having the problem on the test drive, but I could have not noticed it because of all the other awesomeness. Thanks for the help |

Took it in this morning. I was told it is a normal exhaust noise and that I am too sensitive. "I should roll my windows up or turn up the radio if it bothers me."
Pretty bummed now because it really bugs me. |

Do you have NPP exhaust? There is a "chirp" that the valve makes when it flips. There is a bulletin for a special process the dealer can lubricate the valve. (The valve that chirps is up front, not in the rear). With the automatics it's most noticeable when you are "coasting" in traffic at low speed and just give it the slightest amount of gas (enough to change from coasting/decelerating to accelerating/maintaining a speed).

Mine did that and it turned out to be a valve opening in the exhaust system. It also would chirp occasionally coming to a slow smooth stop. Dealer replaced my whole npp exhaust and I'm happy to report chirp is gone. Not saying this is your issue but may be something to check if you can't find any other causes

I might have something similar in my automatic. It's at the dealer but haven't heard what they think yet. Take a look at the thread below where I posted a couple of videos and see if it's similar to what you hear.

I don't have the auto, so no forward valves, and the sound is definitely coming from the front (even though my npp valves in the back also rattle).
The forward noise really sounds like a belt squeak or tensioner. I'll get under the car and take a look next weekend I hope. Maybe take a video and show what I mean. |
