It's an electric brake vacuum pump/brake booster.

Vacuum pump for brake booster, as Killboy stated. I need to replace it on our Equinox with basically the same 3.6L, LFX. The 3.6L must produce poor vacuum. After setting for awhile, cold start, the brake pedal basically will go to the floor. When you turn the key to run, you should hear the pump run and then stop, creating a vacuum. There is a vacuum sensor to determine when to run. Without the pump, it takes a small amount of time to have the brakes function properly.

DOH! i looked again and seen the hose was teed off right to the booster not just the intake!
