Speeding ticket- NJ
Last night was cited for 90 in a 65 on the highway. I was aware I was moving quickly, but another vehicle around me was doing the same speed. This is my first speeding citation and I have no other driving infractions on my record.... 0 points as well. What are my options for 1st time speeding offenders. Lawyer up or plead guilty and pray for lesser charge.

plead guilty and take a driving course if you have the option to keep it off your record. Been through this 3 times already lol.

It all depends on what NJ’s laws are for tickets. Some states allow you to take a drivers course to keep it off your record. Other states don’t have that. I see in your post that “another vehicle around me was doing the same speed”. We’re you both doing 90? If so then you were just the unlucky one that got caught. Even in NJ over 15 over will get you a ticket nearly every time. If you can’t take a course, lawyer up.

Sounds like a good plan. Id be besides myself if i get points. I dont really mind paying. Its a pay to play game when it comes to driving aggressively, and in my situation "paying" is what im going to do a lot of!

I'm not sure how it works now, as I haven't had to deal with it for quite some time. I don't think they offer the courses anymore on NJ, I could be wrong. I know I had to take one the first time my licence was suspended, but that was well over 30 years ago. That course did remove some points from my licence at the time. I did have a lot of points on my licence when I was younger. Again, I'm not sure if things are still the same, but the last two times I got speeding tickets in NJ I opted to go to court because I wanted to avoid points. Both times I was able to make a deal before the case was called and just pay fines and have the points go away. That was many years ago though, over 20. From what I hear the courts are not so willing to do that anymore. But it certainly can't hurt to try, especially if you have a good or clean record.

DO NOT PLEAD GUILTY !!! In NJ you can plead to a reduced offense call "Unsafe Driving" it's no points just a fine ~$300 Right before the start of court the clerk will ask if anyone has a lawyer or if anyone wants to speak to the Prosecutor, get in line to speak to the Prosecutor and ASK him you'd like to plea to Unsafe Safe Driving ... look it up on Google.
Caveat you can only use this plea 3 times in your lifetime so use the plea judiciously for those tickets that carry alot of points or when any points would cost you your license. It can’t be used for DWI |
