SS M6 shifter upgrade hurst or gm?

I’ve read a lot of threads discussing the quality of the stock shifter. I really don’t have an issue with it, but my car is my hobby and I like working on it.

I’ve pretty much decided my next mod will be a short throw shifter, I am looking for feedback from anyone who has changed their SS to a hurst or GM short throw. I want to retain the factory appearance, so both these options will work for me. If you’ve upgraded it, what do you think about the performance?

I've felt the 1le shifter.... Hands down, I would go Hurst again and again

There's a few threads that have a few opinions on the subject. Everyone who has the Hurst loves it from what I've seen. Very Short throw, feels great etc. If you're trying to fix the 2nd gear notchiness, that's solved with a fluid change.

Gm throw reduction 6%
Hurst throw reduction 40

I tried the fluid change, and I saw no difference in the notchy shift to 2nd. I figured out if I move the shifter to neutral and come back to 2nd it is smooth, so that’s generally what I do when the tranny is cold. Just takes longer to shift.

I think installing the shifter will be a decent weekend project, it seems fairly involved for a shifter. I have no real reason for doing it other than I just want to. Just want to make sure I put the right one in the first time.

I wanna say it was red line?? Been a while since I did it, like a year. Synthetic, got rave reviews here on this forum. So that’s why I went that route.

Do not mean to hack the thread but I recently replaced the trans fluid in my 17SS with Royal Purple and the issue with the 2nd gear notchiness has not improved.

You're good man, conversation goes where it goes ...

Like I said, my only way around it is to bring the shifter into the middle, between 3 & 4, then over to 2nd. Then it falls right in.

On the SS models, GM quotes a 8.75% reduction in throw with the 1LE shifter, while Hurst advertises a 40% reduction in throw. The Hurst / stock knob setup sits a little higher (than their white knob setup) and I measured the throw reduction to be 34.4% shorter than stock.

OP, my feedback on the Hurst shifter / stock knob setup is here: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=521320

I recommend the Hurst. I've had 5 different short shifter between my C5/Trans Am and this Camaro. This Hurst feels the most like OEM except shift throws are significantly reduced. I have the pistil grip which i feel helps as well.

I recently had the OEM knob Hurst short throw shifter installed, a very notable decrease in travel, a bit notchy though and I wish it was a bit smoother.

I installed my hurst with factory knob on Sunday. The install sucked but I really like everything about the shifter and the performance, the shifts are quick and precise. It’s definitely up there with the best mods I’ve done on my car.
