I will use 5w30 in my 2017 until it’s no longer available. No need to switch to 0W40 in my thinking because 5w30 is doing the job. To each his own is what I say!

Well, GM said the 5W-30 has been replaced by the 0W-40 in all LT1/LT4 applications.

Your owners manual was written BEFORE GM revised the guidance.

Most importantly, you can be sure GM was seeing some kind of trend across the LT1/LT4 fleet to make such a sweeping recommendation.

If your oil cap confuses you, I suggest you head to your parts department and order a replacement. They all say 0W-40 now.

Ha ha! No confusion here
I'm not replacing anything, my car, I will do with what I want with it, simple is that!

The recommended street oil from a cold weather, warranty and fuel economy standpoint is Mobil 1 0w40 ESP Dexos 2, and after about 2 years since GM announced this it is still the most overpriced oil on the market. It makes no sense that you can't get this basic oil for less than $8.30/qt. This stuff should be ~$5/qt by now and available in 5 qt jugs at Walmart, but Mobil 1 has decided to screw all new Chevy performance car owners.

My car rarely sees cold enough weather or goes long enough between track events for me to put anything but M1 15w50 in it, but when I do use street oil I use Motul 8100 X-Clean 5W40. This is a Dexos 2 oil, and Motul is highly regarded for quality. You can get this for under $8/qt in 5L jugs on Amazon.

Thanks for sharing another good alternative

One thing I think about is oil pump issues... It's strange this change seemingly came up right around a lot of the hooplah about oil pumps. I don't know how 5-counts of anything in motor oil would do anything, but I'm not an expert in anything, and certainly not an engineer.

Actual measured viscosity differences between 0W-40 and 5W-40 are very minor. "0" weight oils are more of a marketing gimmick

My question would be, how many people switched to 0w40 from 5w30 and had oil pump failures? We will probably never know!

That's a great oil and it's what I used from 1st change until the new guidance came out. Always got good Blackstone reports with it.

My bet is that 0w40 does a better job than 5w30 protecting everything including the oil pump, but I also bet there is zero measurable difference in terms of failure rate.

I don't think many very high HP modern performance cars use 5w30. Porsche, McLaren and Ferrari all use 0w40.

At high heat, RPM, load, etc. the viscosity/film strength of Xw30 is pretty low vs Xw40 and above. The cold flow of 0w40 and 5w40 at low temps is probably not much different than 5w30. I don't see any benefit of 5w30 vs Xw40 other than cost.

So no ill effects using the 5W-40 oil? I'll probably go with that weight depending on an email response from Royal Purple.

IMHO no ill effects from using 5w40, but maybe some benefits. Same is true of 15w50 in my opinion, the GM directions to switch back from 15w50 after track use are based on concerns about running it in cold temps, or the long term effects of that weight and ingredients on emissions and gas mileage vs. Dexos 2 0w40.

Royal Purple 5w40 is not Dexos 2 afaik, it doesn't have that cert from GM right? If it doesn't you should not use it, unless you DON'T have a warranty anymore due to mods.

If you DO have a warranty and an issue comes up, they'll definitely know you used non Dexos Royal Purple as soon as they look at the dipstick--it's purple :-)

Correct, RP is only Dexos 1 certified and that's the 5w-30 I believe. I think my cars manual stats a Dexos 1 5W-30 is acceptable for street use in the LT4 engine.

I have no mods but I find it highly unlikely that any warranty issues would come up using a non Dexos oil. The Dexos moniker is just another revenue stream for them, making oil companies pay for the rights to have the All-Mighty Dexos label on there quart.. I don't think GM was testing oil on all the LT engine oil pumps that grenaded over the last few years. Did GM instruct the dealerships to send used oil samples to Blackstone? I doubt it.
