Do any CAIs make more power with the hood closed?
I did some back-to-back MAP logging of stock vs. Roto-fab recently, and was disappointed in the results. I can't measure an improvement from the Roto-fab in either MAP or quarter mile trap speed. Looking at the design, I'm guessing it just can't flow enough thru the factory inlet location, once its sealed to the hood?
Attached are my hptuners logs of MAP vs. RPM, with a 10-point moving average trendline. The car is dropping < 96 kPa by redline, suggesting there are a lot of gains to be had in better flowing throttle bodies and/or intakes. Are there any off-the-shelf kits that will improve power with the hood closed? Seems to me they'd have to find another location to draw from. Thanks for any help. You could try removing the snow/rain guard behind the grill and see if that does anything

Most won't show a lot of power on the dyno, but at the track is where they really show up. Even with a fan hood up or down still can't replicate what you see down track going thru the traps. Just like header or any other mods, the dyno is just to tune, street or track is where the power shows up in the ET and MPH. I'm on my 3rd Lt1, 16 Camaro SS, 16 C7 bolt on and now my 2022 Lt1 Magnuson SC and Toohighpsi port injection, I've done about every mod to all of these cars in one form or the other. I've seen very little pick up on the dyno with some of the mods and head to the track and puts a big smile on my face. There is just no substitution for track time.

In addition, I also have the Velossa big mouth snorkel that further helps channel incoming air into the intake.

Thanks. I'm skeptical it did anything, but I just cut the guard part off. |

You won't see much for gains until you start doing more mods to make more power. In stock form the factory air box is pretty good.

However this pretty much confirms it for me: I saw a ~0.5 kPa difference in MAP at high RPM simply by removing the seal at the top of the roto-fab intake (see attached image). The factory inlet is simply not large enough. I'm sure a fully open hood, as you could do on a dyno, would show further improvement. Note these pulls were done after removing the snow / rain deflector, which made no measurable difference. Of course I'm not recommending anyone run without that seal since IATs went way up. I'm probably going to remove the Roto-fab and go back to stock. I don't guess there are any aftermarket intakes with clever ways of getting more cold air beyond the stock inlet? What does the ZL1 airbox do; does it simply have a larger inlet? Last edited by gbeaty; 07-08-2023 at 06:58 PM. |

If you run a msd intake, 103 tb, and a jlt intake you’d see a good drop in kpa
I had a msd and the jlt way back, but no 103. It still showed good kpa
