Am I doing this right? Valve spring shims.

Am I doing this valve spring shimming correct?

1.790 installed spring height without any shims
.635 valve lift
1.000 coil bind
Target of .060 to .080 from coil bind.

1.790-0.635-1.000 = .155 current distance from bind. Shim of .075 to .095 to fall within specs?

This is the btr rpm spring kit. Doesn’t that seem like a lot of shims?

Coil bind for those springs is 1070 so at 790 spring height which is what btr speca you are golden no shims needed

here is the box. i was told i need to actually measure the bind so i did and came up with 1.009 which is closer to the number you said. if i use the 1.009 number that puts my new math at.

1.790-0.635-1.009 = 0.146 from bind so shims in the .086 to .066 range.

my goal is high revs and very high boost. my understanding is i want to be near the .060 from bind. is this not correct?

I would call btr but the installed height on those springs according to the box is .710 not .790 so the 66 shims would work. What cam are you running?

I am not looking for a closed height. I want an open height and I want it .060-.080 from bind. The idea I am told it to dampen spring oscillation by having the springs bump into each other at full lift.

I did talk to Brian Tooly and some other people. They said I am on the right track for a high boost high rpm low yearly mile set up. Brian did suggest I use an oil with some zinc in it because of the high pressure on the rocker arm tip. Cam is something like 232 duration and 635 lift.

Out of curiosity, what are they considering "low yearly mileage"?

I told him 1500miles a year, maybe 8k rpm and 30+psi. He said

“Okay, you're on the right track then. Spring pressure is a double edged sword. Insufficient pressure leads to closing bounce which is destructive, but that amount of open pressure can be hard on valve tips so oil with a lot of zinc additives is recommended.”

I wasn't expecting that low. That is drive it to the track, rip on it, drive home, and park it mileage...

More curiosity... lol...

Are you running the stock style PVC/Catch can setup? Or, are you going something different with the Non Dexos oil? (I'm guessing there isn't any hi zinc formulated dexos 2 since there isn't really ANY dexos2 rated oils), or, is there some sort of zinc additive to add to the oil?

Yeah, I don’t drive it much, it is a toy. I will put 300 hard miles on it during ice cream cruise weekend and other than that just drive it to the track and a pile of runs down the track. Maybe to work a few times.

The crank case is vented to an open catch can. Oil has always been valvoline dexos2 or whatever it is we are suppose to use. I am going to try some “dominator” amsoil this year.

Well if you drop the installed height by .070 you will be ay your sweetspot of about .080 from bind
