Wireless CarPlay on 2016-2020 possibly??

So this is just a thought of mine but since the 2021 have wireless CarPlay I’m wondering if you took the 2021 radio out and used it on the older gens would you be able to keep the wireless CarPlay?? NotE this is just a thought and I do not have the funds to try nor the knowledge to attempt it. So I wonder if someone at the gen5diy guys could attempt something of the sort I would go for it. After all there is nothing wrong with mine so I could sell it to offset the price.

I'm not holding my breath for that kind of conversion, our 2016-2018 car with the 2.5 infotainment and older bus protocols will certainly not work with a 2021 head unit that runs mylink 3.0.

Instead, I backed this project and am waiting for my test unit to arrive: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/aawireless#/ . The guy already has a working prototype and in fact already demoed his approach with a cobbled together setup in 2019. Maybe I should ugrade to an new android phone first, though, mine has only 7.1 , but that's less of a problem than trying to shoehorn a head unit into my car that GM never intended for use with the older platform.

  • Thanks for starting this thread Drew.
  • For CarPlay, there looks like several solutions.
  • One that looks "pro" seems to be CPLAY2air wireless CarPlay adapter.
  • I might just be tempted to pull the trigger on this.
  • At least 2 x Camaro6 people have tried this and works in their Gen6 Camaros.

  • I pulled the trigger on this - USD 129.95 w/free shipping.
  • I'll let you know my experience.
  • BTW, there was 1 x Camaro review on the CPLAY2air site - anyone notice anything funny about this review?

Well, the proper transcription would be "Semion", but for some reason people started using plain transliteration (Семён => S, E, M, E, N => Semen) even though ё is pronounced "io". Someone who speaks Russian (or remembers more than I forgot, heh) might be able to explain in more depth.

I'd argue that the proper transcription would be Semyon (at least that's how I've always seen it), but otherwise you nailed it.

Stumbled upon this since I was trying to see if any GM car forum if someone is working on retrofitting.

https://www.gm-trucks.com/wireless-a...verado-sierra/

I can't believe though there is such little support on this. My old E92 someone made wireless carplay for that and fits oem integration.

In a word, No.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto needs to use both Bluetooth and WiFi for communications so that the screen updates and such happen at the correct speed. The WiFI radio in the cars is not inter-connected with the head unit in any way to facilitate that communication - this is why some folks are building dongles that plug into USB (which is connected to the head unit) and operate a WiFi connection for the device to connect to. The end result is that you get the 'wireless experience', but you have to sacrifice one of your precious USB ports to do it (not that it's THAT big of a deal since you're already using one with WIRED CarPlay / Android Auto).

Now that is double nerd mode right there, Sir, thank you very much. A "y" in this position is indeed easier to recognize for an English speaker than a weak "i", so your point is absolutely valid.

Another weird example of this silly transcription, by the way, is Mikhail Gorbachev, whose last name should be written as Gorbachov (I know I've just aged myself, heh). Same idea except the "y" sound merges with the "ch", at least to my untrained ears.

...and I think this is where I'll stop offing this thread before OP comes after me with a baseball bat

This is my 2cent: I have wireless carplay and it is shitty. It drops the connection too much for my liking. I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max and yes it's software is up to date. Since I plug the wire in I have no issues. I thought I wanted wireless but it's a pain. Hope your experience is better.

It will be interesting to see if your experience improves as GM releases updates to the Infotainment software and yours gets updated OTA... Have you checked to see if there's an update ready "now"?

2020 yes, 2019 likely 2016-2018 no.

There is already a kit out for the 2020 with testing pending on 2019 models.
