Tow Rig thread

For those of you who tow your camaros to the track, lets see and discuss them! Feel free to talk about what works and what doesn't around loading and unloading, winching, strap downs etc... I haven't found a thread like that around here.

A lot of people give me grief for towing to the track with a car that could very easily be driven to the track, but since I already own a truck and trailer from my former car, i still do for piece of mind. Would hate to have an off, or an incident that left me disabled at the track, then I would have to call a tow truck, no thanks!

I think the 1/2 is right around it's limits with a 1300 lb trailer, 3700lb car and gear. In the process of getting track wheels and tires, so that will add another 200 lbs to the rack. While the towing capacity is 9100 lbs, i think a 250 or XD might be a nice upgrade once the 1500 approaches 100k miles.

Funny, I bought my Cayenne S when all I needed to tow was my Boxster S or the 964, either of which fit great on the Trailex aluminum trailer. Needless to say, the Camaro doesn’t fit on the Trailex (heck, my dads old GT4 BARELY fit on it). We have two other trailers in the family the Camaros fit on just fine, one is a steel deck (~1900lbs) and a wood deck (1600lbs).

The Cayenne tows the Camaro great on either setup (electric brakes on both). Most people are surprised to see a Porsche towing a Camaro. They’re more surprised when I tell them the Cayenne S is factory rated for 7700lbs towing capacity. I’ve towed to Watkins Glen 2x now, 2700 mile round trip, and VIR 2x, 2500 mile round trip, and Mid Ohio 4x 1,000 mile round trip.

I am in the market for a used 3/4 ton though gor next season. A good friend and I are going to race his S2000 in some enduros, and need to be able to pull his 28” enclosed trailer... the Cayenne ain’t up for that!

Haha, funny how things pan out. I had a smaller wood trailer for my E46, then upgraded to the aluminum one. The ram towed the E46 just fine, and does it's job well with the Camaro. the longest I have towed was to barber and back, bout 1600 miles round trip. I would love a bit more stability.

I would 100% look into those Titan XD's - they fill a unique gap between a 1/2 and 3/4 ton. Towing is well over 10k, but doesn't ride like a 3/4 ton. Wheelbase is much longer than a standard 1/2 ton as well. I would say it would be equivalent to "light duty heavy duty" haha. You can find a solid certified one for 28-32k. Worth a look.

Cool! Yeah, not a big fan of the XD’s, plus I’m gonna keep the Cayenne as my daily. So I’m good with a 100-150k F250 that isn’t crazy loaded- It’ll just be a tow pig. Have my eye on a 2011+ F250, with latest 6.7.

Let me know what you wind up getting, my 1500 has 90k miles on it, really only use it on weekends for projects and towing. Probably will replace it in the next 2 years or so. We'll see.

Do you use all four wheels as strap points?

The only people that make fun of people who two their cars to the track fall under one of two categories:

They are jealous because they dont have a truck/trailer themselves

They have never actually raced their car before. Or else they would know that stuff breaks... and when it breaks, a truck and trailer are invaluable

The 8 speed transmission makes easy work of the trailer with the Camaro on it. You can't tell I like white or anything right?

Thanks! Just used it on it's first tow outing, did a fine job hauling my RX-7 on a heavy uhaul trailer.

That's a great looking truck. I don't know if I've seen a standard cab with a dually before. Love the cummins. Looks like you have a serious suspension setup.

Yep, because neither haulers nor trailers EVER brake down eh? Lol And when THAT happens you will be paying for 2 tows vs 1. Ever saw both rigs upside down in a ditch on a busy freeway because of a flat? I have. Shit can happen in either scenario. Neither is 100% worry free imo.

But seriously, each method has its pros and cons. Been there done them all. Hauling is very nice for running slicks. Arriving and driving is my fave for streets. Towing a tire trailer is my least preferred method as it requires swapping wheels twice day. But a good option cost wise.

These days i just arrive and drive. But heres a couple of pix of my last 2 rigs before the 1le. Btw absolutely loved my GMC Sierra. Even with heavy duty suspension this truck drove like a friggin Caddy. Aluma Tilt was a nice trailer too. But not without teething issues like shorting out its electrical due to a wire rub on a maiden voyage at night (of course!). Or one of its beefy D rings almost coming apart due to cross loading. Ah the joys of hauling lol! But id go back if i ever decided to run slicks again.

Started driving to the events...
Then an open trailer....
Then a simple 20' enclosed Haulmark...
Now this.

Tools/spare tires and wheels/gas cans/lots of other stuff to bring with these days.

At some of the bigger tracks it's great to have a pit bike to go watch some of the other groups on the track.

Just like track cars....how much you want to devote to it, how deep you want to get in, how much you want to spend!

Lots of different choices. My favorite part right now is the GMC 2500HD Diesel. Unbelievable truck. Gets 21mpg not towing at 80mph on the interstate. Gets 12 towing the trailer and car. Pulls through the mountains at 2,000 rpm up the hills and engine brakes down.

Love my truck!
