Bias ply tire/wheel that clears stock set up

Is there a choice or two, or should I run a drag radial. I've always heard/read that you run a bias ply on a manual unless you want to break things. Thanks for any help. I guess that would also safely require a bias ply front runner. Probably gets expensive.

This is from one of my other posts. I have the tires, waiting for the wheels to ship, should have them next week, they were on back order. I felt like i got a good deal when I spoke with Mike at Kent's hot rod garage. Racestar recommended him for a wheel and tore setup.

Front
Wheels: Race Star 92's 17x4.50 5x120BC 1.75"BS GLOSS BLACK
Tires: M/T ET FRONT 27.5/4.0-17 (skinnies)

Rear
Wheels: Race Star 92's 17x10.5 5x120BC 7" BS GLOSS BLACK
Tires: M/T ET STREET R BIAS 28x11.5-17

I currently run MMR M228 (gen 5 z28 replicas) and continental extremcontact tires. Going to this drag pack I will save 27 lbs at each rear corner, and 42 lbs at each front corner for a total of about 138 lbs just in wheels and tires, all rotating mass!

I run the 28x10-17 hoosier slick on a 17x9.5 race star polished wheel and 17x4.5 up front with 28" tall skinnies. Pretty good 60' ft also w/1.45 being my best and probably average 1.50 depending on the track.

Bias ply offers more protection as it absorbs the drivetrain shock in manuals. It is also more forgiving in finding the "sweet spot" of launch rpm and tire pressure.

Some people avoid mixing bias ply rears and radial fronts. If makes it feel like the car is swaying back and forth on the top end. It doesnt effect performance, but can make people feel uneasy. I've done it before on my 4th gen.... wasnt that bad.

Looks like about $2k for the least expensive wheel/tire set up. I'll probably continue on my Michelins and try to get in the 1.90's and see what happens.

I wanted a 26" tire for a better effective rear end ratio with the M6. I was disappointed that MT does not offer their MT ET Street Rs bias ply in 26", so I just went with the Street Rs 275/40/17 for my RaceStars. Not as much meat on these so hoping they will be less prone to cause breakage than a wider tread width DR and since I am not planning to change front tires, no rear end wiggle that some indicate if I had a bias ply in the back.

What gear and RPM are you going thru the lights at? I see you are NA correct? When I was basically stock I was going thru the lights grabbin 4th a little before the lights (not ideal at all). Now with my SC setup i am pretty wound up pretty tight in 4th, maybe 5500-6000.

Yes, I am NA. I have not run yet, just got the tires/wheels mounted the other day, and still need to install some BMR rear trailing arms and cradle lockout. The 26" 275/40/17 should provide an effective rear ratio of ~ 3.95 which I believe will be better than using a 28" tire on a M6 car. Another forum member, Cal Webster, did a lot of tire experimentation with his M6 ZL1, and achieved better results with 26" tires, although he was using Hoosiers. I also wanted a tire that I could drive on to go back and forth to the track, so choose the MT DRs. While I wanted a bias ply to put less shock on the drivetrain, nothing was available in 26". Hopefully, with this combo, I can minimize the risk of breaking something. That said, I haven't been on a drag strip in over 50 years, so there will be some driver experimentation needed in addition to seeing how this combo works out.

The R has a softer sidewall than a s/s. The m6 that broke stuff was on bias plys makes you wonder

A couple of guys with M6 SS Camaros said they broke axles on the dragstrip with a stock motor. One had slicks (bias ply) and the other had Michelin Sport Cup 2s (radials).
