Full Definition of motor from Webster's:

1 : one that imparts motion; specifically : prime mover

2 : any of various power units that develop energy or impart motion: as a small compact engine

3 : internal combustion engine; especially : a gasoline engine

4 : a rotating machine that transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy

5 : motor vehicle; especially : automobile

Many decades ago, "motors" were powered electrically and "engines" were powered by heat generated by internal combustion. Today, the two words are interchangeable. I use "motor" almost all the time.

I have yet to rebuilt and electric engine, but have changed bearings in many industrial electric motors. But yes it is a mix of improper use starting with the motorcycle, motorway, motorcar. It seems that the engine can be called a motor, but a motor can't be called and engine.

Ie a starter engine, windshield wiper engine, fuel pump engine.........
So the term used correctly..... or not, is one directional and not interchangable.

An engine is a type of motor just as a Camaro is a type of car but all cars are not Camaros just as not all motors are engines. Everyone has read the posted definitions, pretty self explanatory.

...Just to add.....IMO motors are what operate things that don't "move"....Engines were used to "motorize" things like tractors...(once horse-drawn, with an engine they became motorized)....

.Interchangeable for automobiles, motor or engine, but I don't think you will find the term "engine" used as much in products that do not physically move without an engine...lol

Anyway, it's a fun mind teaser, but really a non-issue...lol...

So... To sum this up: All Engines are Motors, not all Motors are Engines.
