New Cam New Oil?
With all this talk of adding new cams, should we be changing to a different oil? Normal street and stock is 5w30, track is suppose to be 0w40. New oil from Gm and Mobil 1 is a stock filled 0w40 for new Corvettes and if you look at the spec sheet looks like new camaro too. So now throw in a larger cam along with possible forged pistons and rods. Should we be changing to a different oil?

Shouldn’t have any affect on oil selection.

yes a cam makes a big difference in oil selection but not viscosity. You need a oil high in Zinc. like Amsoil ZRod 10w30 or Driven LS30 (5w30) Your motor is clearanced for 5w30. 10w30 still works.

I should have bought a ZL1

New Mobil 1 0w40 oil is 900 phos and 990 zinc. It looks like a great new oil. Should be fine with new cam and lifters. And you can street or track use it.

You dont need that much zinc unless you are changing from roller to flat tappet....

better to have more than you need then not enough and regular full synthetic oils dont have enough.

If you're changing out pistons and rods I would at the very least run a higher viscosity oil.
Factory clearances are generally tighter than what most shops can do. And again since you're swapping pistons & rods I'm assuming you'll be racing it more frequently than GM intended. Your main bearings will see that punishment. So i'd also go with higher zinc. I ran Zrod oil in my last built motor. Also on my LT1, since I religiously beat on it during weekends.
