Track tested the RF vs. cut stock box and Green filter.

We were able to test the RF w/ dry filter vs. the Stock CAI with the bottom of the box cut out and running a Green filter. We got the car dialed in in the "stock" configuration first. I think the pass represented was done in -300 to -400 DA. The two RF tests were done at the end of the day in +100 DA. We ran out of time to do multiple runs in each configuration. You can tell that even with higher DA and a slower 60ft the RF was just plain faster than a modified stock box with the Green filter. The last test we tried was to run the stock CAI's inlet tube on the RF box. In my mind the taper of the stock tube and the two 60* bends could be a benefit over the RF's non tapered tube with a 120* bend. We did not tuning for the RF tests. We just slapped it on and ran. The results of that test were inconclusive in my mind. Here is how it laid out.

Interesting. Do you expect to do more testing in these configs, specifically RF with stock tube??

I may see what the stock tube does on my car at some point. But testing against stock or any variation of stock is pointless to me. I have been saying for a year that the RF is a producer. I have seen it many times on the dyno and now verified on the track. There is no question in my mind at all that the RF is the best CAI out there.

Is anyone else concerned about running a rotofab dry filter and its ability to capture dust compared to the stock filter? I would like to do an oil analysis and look for silica and evidence of dust.

Also what about the ZL1 air intake? I looked at gmpartsdirect and the ZL1 air intake appears to have all the same part numbers as the LT1 SS intake, is this true, are they the same intake?

What? I am going to guess that I don't get what you are saying. The stock, cut up box with the Green filter had the best 60ft and was done in basically -500 DA better than the RF tests and was still half a tenth and 1 mph behind. What am I missing from what you wrote?

People claim that the cut box and Green filter are better than the RF. Clearly that isn't the case at the track. 1 mph is significant, especially over a modified box with a filter. The gap would have been much larger had this been a stock air box.

I am not sure why the 60ft is off by .002 except for the climb in the DA but I didn't tune or drive this car. I adjusted some shift points but that was about it. All of us saw a .001-.002 rise in 60ft as the day went along so I guess it was consistent.

The Dry filter does not catch the same amount of dust as the stock filter. Nor will it catch as much as the oiled filter.

The ZL1 air tube is different than stock. It did show the same number as the LT1 when I was trying to get one for my LT4 conversion. I had to pull up the diagram and show the parts person which one I wanted. You had to get it by car VIN back then.

Please excuse my inability to follow along... when you speak of the stock tube, are we talking about the SS stock tube or the ZL1 stock tube on the RF in your testing? I have your ported stock IM, and a dry RF in the garage, and was thinking when I finally get to do the install it would be worth following your testing results if it is indeed the stock A8 2SS tube getting the gains over the RF tube with no said fuel conversion. I am just starting to look into the E85 idea, and in my limited research it seems EFI Tuning's kit is the preferred.

Too easy buddy. Testing was done on a 2SS. Not a ZL1. The tube is the connecting piece from the CAI to the TB. You can use either tube on the RF. So from after the hard piece with the MAF in it. I have no idea where the ZL1 piece came from. It won't fit the stock or RF to the TB so it is out regardless. I would have to do more testing between the tubes. But the concept is sound and interesting.

Lol the parts identification are elementary. I guess cmitchell17 threw me off with his post. Thank you again Sir for all you do!
