I use Valvoline MST 5w40 Dexos 2 in the 5 quart easy pour container from Walmart. $50 for 2 with free shipping so only ~$5/qt

TL/DR: SAPS is a tradeoff. More SAPS content = oil will have higher base number (better anti corrosion) and less wear on the moving metal parts in your engine. Less SAPS content = less particulate "ash" generated when as the oil ages with heat over time... so less deposits, but more wear/corrosion.

What is SAPS?
SAPS stands for sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur. They comprise a significant portion of a motor oil’s additive content. Sulfated ash is not added to oil; it is the result of additives in the oil burning and creating ash. The additives that can produce ash are most commonly used for total base number (TBN), but also help in other areas, like antioxidancy, anti-wear, cleanliness and soot handling. Phosphorus provides anti-wear properties and further antioxidancy, while sulfur contributes antioxidancy, anti-wear properties and engine cleanliness.

SAPS Levels
Given the beneficial properties these additives impart, it’s easy to assume a higher concentration equals a better oil. But higher SAPS levels can be a detriment to expensive exhaust devices, such as diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and catalysts. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) realized the importance of using motor oil formulated with precise SAPS levels, and lower limits were established in 2010. This is more important in GDI cars like ours that are more prone to forming oil-based deposits inside and outside the cylinder.

Bottom line: SAPS is yet another tradeoff we must make in the name of fuel economy. If you're concerned enough, send a sample off to blackstone and pay the extra $10 for the TBN (total base number) test. This will tell you if your low SAPS oil retained enough base number to maintain protection through its lifecycle. From my own experience I can tell you that Valvoline 5w30 dexos1 and Supertech 5w30 dexos1 both performed perfectly over 12mo and 3k miles in The Mistress.
