Time for new tires

Put 21k miles on my SS between May of 2018 when I bought it, to currently, mostly freeway miles between Austin and Atlanta which I did about 6 times last year. Tires are about ready to be changed.

So, I'm going to steer away from the summer tires. They handled okay when it was hot outside, horrible when it was cold or wet. Sometimes even when it was dry and hot I still had trouble getting these Goodyears to hook even during mild acceleration. Will be discarding them and won't be looking back.

I had Kuhmo Ecsta's - 275 rears / 255 fronts on 19" wheels 99 Z28, never had a problem with them.

Right now its a toss between:

Michelin PS4S
Cooper Zeon RS3-G1's
GMAX AS-05's

In short, I know I will sacrifice some cornering of the summer tires, but I think its a better compromise than sacrificing the entire car when it rains.

Which of these would compromise the lease amount of cornering while still retaining the best performance during the rain?

Any other tire recomendations?

I vote Michelins. can't go wrong. however, not to good in the colder temps, better than stock though. that's more of a true summer tire.

well you said you wanna steer away from summer tires, and cooper is the only one on your list thats a all weather. BUT I would still choose Michelin PS4S all day long.

One more S4 vote

I have 28,000 Kilometers on a set of Micheline 4S with out any handling problems. The 4S is far better than the OEM Goodyears in almost every way.

I've had the GMAX AS-05 on my car as my "winter" set for about 2 months now. The car doesn't see any snow or rain, but on cold/dry pavement they seem to handle at least as well as the stock Goodyear's did in the summer.

I've had good luck with Michelin tires on a variety of vehicles in the past, and they are likely a notch above these, but I don't think the GMAX can be beaten for the price. I had mine installed for $750 after taxes and a rebate.

You listed some good options there. For cornering and some spirited driving we like the Bridgestone - Potenza RE-71R tires. We have lots of customers that drive them year-round and run a few auto cross events with rubber to spare.

To answer the bolded question: Michelin PS4S.

However, you said that you don't wish to deal with summer only tires, which the Michelin is. One thing to keep in mind is that the Michelin is not as terrible as a tire as the GY AS3 is when cold or in puddled rain - it is better in the rain and a bit better when cold.

With that said, for an all season, which the Cooper and General are, I'd go for the General GMAX AS-05. It is a very good, all-'round, value tire. Over the Cooper, it should be better if things get cold out, but with similar dry and wet performance. The Cooper would be my third choice.

The PS4S would be an awesome choice in Austin, where it doesn’t get too cold. I opted for the General AS-05. Michelin was a bit too expensive.

I might suggest you look into some Continental DWS all seasons. They wear well. I used some DW Continentals (summer only) that I bought on a close out as my first set of track tires. They held up very well. Very predictable with a lot of communication when they were at the limits.

I bought the Coopers. $850 installed and with a 25K warranty. Great value for the money. Wearing well with no issues so far.

How do you like the AS-05's?

I like them a lot. Might even go with them on the Miata once those need tires. Been over 100 on them in the rain and they performed well. Dry traction is very good too. Tirerack has tested them, so I’d go look at their review.
