Mobil 0W-40 or Mobil 15W-50 for track use?

I reside in Toronto Canada and will be taking the ZL1 to the track in the next month.

With that said I have my handy little check list of fluids to change prior to the track;

1. Flush brake fluid and use Dot 4. In my case I will be using the Motul Racing Brake Fluid

2. Automatic Transmission Fluid - Do I really need to change this? The manual says have transmission fluid set to the track-specific oil level? The car has 7,000 miles with original ATF.

3. Which oil to use? $17 per bottle (Canadian $$) for the 15W-50 and $25 for the OW-40. I am leaning to the 0W-40 for the superior wear attributes but I am sure I will be fine with either option?

Just curious what others have chosen to use.

Cheers!

I am interested in this as well. But, I was thinking the 15w-50 was specified as track usage because of the high oil temps when running on a track. A 40 might not handle it as well.

The only 0W40 approved oil must be Dexos 2. The bottle must be labeled Dexos 2. It’s hard to find. Dealers are the only place that might have it. If you can’t find it there is Valvoline Synpower 5w40 MST that is Dexos 2 and would be fine for track use. The third choice would be a Dexos 1 15w50.

The new 0-40 Dexos 2 ESP oil is starting to become more and more available. Both my GM dealers can order it from our oil supplier now and I assume that would mean that a vast majority of other dealers will be able to order it too. It's now the standard oil listed in the service bulletin for LT1, LT4, and LT5. All dealer oil changes with those engines (And perhaps others) are to use the new 0-40 Dexos 2 ESP stuff.

Worth noting that it won't be available from Auto Zone, Advanced Auto, O'Reilly's etc. for several more months, likely not until fall. At this point you'll have to have it changed at your dealer or at least order it through them.

If you run 15W50 you have to change back to 30/40wt for the street. If you don't mind that then run 15W50 otherwise you need a Dexos2 oil, one of which is motul X-clean 5W40 but here in the states it's usually online only.

I picked up my ZL1 with the A10 transmission last week. The oil cap on the engine says 15 30w dexos. It does not say 0- 15 dexos 2

Pretty easy work.... eliminating the secondary cats just pulled more heat out of the tunnel. Transmission temps have never gone over 212 on my PDR data.

The M1 15w-50 and M1 ESP 0W-40 will work on the track. Niether is better. Also M1 European 0w-40 is not the same as M1 ESP 0W-40.

Here in EU the only one I can find is the M1 European 0w-40. I assume comparing both data sheets it can work... this one is the oil who adjust better numbers to the new 0w40 Formula (USA), comparing the rest of 0w40 / 5w40 availables.
