Havent read or heard anything about it. Personally, oil is oil, I buy what the owners manual suggests and call it a day. Same with the filters. I know alot of people that swear by Amsoil, RP , Redline ect. at the end of the day its oil.
I think theres very little difference in oil quality to justify spending alot more money on a sexy oil.

Lol I like how you said a sexy oil. I have been reading into this oil more and it looks pretty similar the other 5w30 Dexos1 that they sell but at almost double the cost.

I use it. Its Dexos 2 approved so all good here. Hopefully it does help with the build up DI engines can leave.

I think so long as you use the recommended weight and it meets the manufacturer's specs, it's fine. No need for fancy, expensive, exotic oils. The mechanical kind, that is.... this is a family show

I used Valvoline MST synthetic for 3 years as the 5/40 (I believe) is approved for track use. I ran it most of the time, then went to 5/30. I read that Valvoline changed the formulation last year, may switch to something else. It was $5 a quart on sale at Napa several times a year. Need to read my 2020 owner's manual.

This is the best deal on the "old" Valvoline 5/40 MST for track use https://www.walmart.com/ip/Valvoline...YaAhfgEALw_wcB

Part number is VV966 on the quart bottles. Edit: it just went up $10 on the 5 quart size.
This is straight out of the 1LE supplement. You can use 5w-30 Dexos 1. Not sure if there's really a bunch of difference between Dexos 1 and 2. I guess they're assuming you're going to track a 1LE variant, and if so, 0W-40 Dexos 2 is required. I'm not sure what, if anything, changed from 2017 when 5W-40 Dexos was approved for track use.
Viscosity Grade
Use SAE 0W-40 viscosity grade
engine oil for the LT1 and LT4
engines.
When selecting an oil of the
appropriate viscosity grade, it is
recommended to select an oil of the
correct specification. See
“Specification” earlier in this section.
If 0W-40 dexos2 oil is not available,
SAE 5W-30 dexos1 full synthetic
engine oil may be used for
street use.

I did get told through my service manager buddy from a GM engineer, that the oiling system had been changed in 2019 and they "recommend" using the oil listed in the owner's manual. My question was could I use the 5w-40 Dexos 2 Valvoline that I used for track use in my 17 and that was his answer. Weird thing is that is says 15W-50 but no Dexos statement, but every other oil viscosity said Dexos2 or Dexos1 for 5W-30 street use. I'm baffled that you can run 0W-40, 5W-30, or 15W-50, but not 5W-40. Could someone explain that one?

It probably would do everyone some good to understand what "Dexos Approved" means

The only thing that comes along with that Certification is that the oil manufacturer has (1) paid for the Dexos license to GM. The upfront cost is not much ($10k for each product that will display the Dexos logo), but beyond that there is a $.36 per gallon "tax" paid to GM for every gallon sold.

As far as a change to the LT1 engine, there has been none in regards to oil. The government requires the OEMs to specify thinner and thinner oil for environmental reasons. So the only difference between a 2014-2018 LT1 and a 2019-Current LT1 is the writing on the oil cap.

IMO a 0W oil is too light to be used on any V8 engine that is going to do anything other than cruise down the highway. If it is a daily driver that never sees and aggressive driving and the owner is worried about warranty - then run the Dexos oil. It will be fine. However there is no reason to spend any more money on it than Supertech Synthetic.

But if the engine is modded, gets driven to its limit, has boost, and/or runs E85, you need to make better choices on oil. You have already voided your warranty - so there is no need to even think about the Dexos approved product.

These applications require more film strength as there are additional loads being put on the journals and bearings - enough to push a 0W oil right out from between the moving parts. Higher power N/A builds should be running 5W at a minimum. Boosted or NOS, 10W at a minimum.

Remember - the oil in the engine has several key roles to perform. (1st) is lubrication, and the properties that pertain to lubrication are Zinc and Phosphorus content. (2nd) is to take away heat - which is represented by the second two numbers in your oil "weight" call out. IE - a 5w30 can't carry as much heat as a 5w40. And (3rd) - keeping the engine clean - which are your calcium and magnesium levels.

If you are running E85 - then I would suggest 10W at a minimum and consider 15W or 20W as the Ethanol will water down the oil a lot. And be prepared to change it often. Like change it every 1500-2000 miles (whenever it starts changing from light brown to coffee color).

If you are running cams with a lot of lift / aftermarket lifters and/or have converted over to bearing-less rocker conversions (I use the CHE kit) then you need to run a oil with a minimum of 1000ppm of Zinc. There is not enough high shear strength protection in your "Dexos" oils (they are typically 600-700ppm) to protect these tight tolerance higher friction areas of the engines. A good way to get these higher addative oils is to look at your "High Mileage" variants - they typically have another 100-150ppm of Zinc and Phosphorus.

I myself tend to swim around the Mobil1 products, not because I think their stuff is the best, but because (1) they publish their Zinc and Phosphorus contents, and (2) their products are readily available. Their FS, M, Ext Perf and Turbo Diesel truck oils are all reasonably priced, higher Zinc options. I use the 15w50 in the summer, and 5w40 FS in cooler weather. A quart of Lucas with each oil change.
