Whenever you think about radiated electromagnetic energy, you always have to remember the inverse square rule. The "strength" of the energy is inversely proportional to the SQUARE of the distance to the source. Sitting in the passenger seat, the field coming off the alternator may actually be stronger than that from the induction phone charger.
This is how it always works, but it is not exactly intuitive, particularly for non-science types.

Yes thanks inverse square rule well understood but not knowing the "strength" of the energy at the source and not knowing how much energy it would take to interfere with the pacemaker/defibrillator, I wasn't comfortable with the assumptions there. I was really hoping to just turn it off. Since that does not appear to be an option, I did talk to his cardiologist today. The response was "there should be no issues". Guess he's pulling the CYA card too Thank you all for the input and suggestions.

From some of the other articles I pulled up...
Most likely place to encounter pacemaker interference problems-- a hospital!

I would think you'd be able to put something around the charging pad in most every direction as shielding. Wouldn't have to be permanent if your Dad is not a frequent passenger . . . might be best to ground that to body metal, though.

Me too. Tried 5 different phones and nothing. I use it for a sunglass holder. It works good for that. Even with spirted driving the sunglasses stay put.
