Since my SA said GM no longer stocked it because it was discontinued, I went to Mobil direct. Here is what I received and I did forward that email to the SA at the dealership:

George,

Thanks for writing to us. That would be a weird situation for GM since it's the factory fill on the 2020 Corvette models they're building in Bowling Green. A more likely explanation is that the original part number was phased out in mid-2018. The first cases of oil we supplied for GM dealers were produced before we have a US market retail label, they were in such a big rush to get it. For several months the bottles had a European market label along with an extra decal stating, "Not marked for retail sale, commercial use only."

Retailers should be able to order the product under the following part number.

123875 - (Six 1-quart bottles)

Around mid year 2019, Walmart added this oil to their website for online purchases, but they're unlikely to keep it in-store any time soon.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for choosing Mobil,
Jim

My 2020 doesn't mention 5/40 dexos 2 anywhere, like ya'll know, it's 0/40 dexos 2 (Mobil1 ESP) or 15w-50 (no dexos rating stated) for racing. 5w-30 dexos 1 is acceptable for street use. I said if I can run 0-40 or 15-50, why can't I run 5/40 dexos 2? He called a Chevy "engineer" who told him to tell me to stick to the owner's manual recommendations as they changed the oiling system in 2019.
If anybody can help with these questions, I would greatly appreciate it:

1. Since mine is a 2017 ZL1, does that mean that I have a different oil pump?
2. I wonder if I can get away with the 5w/30 or is the 0w/40 also better for the older engines as well?

Thanks in advance

He probably means they changed the oil pump. Again, the differences in viscosity between 0W-40 (the "zero" is a gimmick anyway) and 5W-30 are minor. The manual states dexos1 is fine and higher viscosity is needed for the track because of much higher engine loads and sustained high temps, it has nothing to do with dexos2

if you drive the car hard on the street 0W-40 is a good choice

Mobil 1 claims no issues running 0-40 in current or passed dexos rated motors. In fact they are giving out new oil caps for current corvette and Camaro owners that has 0-40 on the oil cap

Here is a good video that might answer some questions

I am running the Valvoline MST 5w-30 dexos 2 and don't beat on mine. I do know Valvoline changed their new MST oils and are no longer Dexos if I remember correctly. I will use what I have left then go with Penzoil's Platinum Euro L 5W-39 for daily driving. It's $22 for 5 qts at the W. If I can find some of the old MST 5W-40, I may scoop up a bunch and use it for track and street like I did before. I change mine every 5000 either way. Walmart also has their Supertech 5/30 Dexos 1 for like $17 @ 5 qt jug. Even crazier is Costco with their 5W-30 syn Dexos 1 for $2.50 a quart!!!!! I would rather run something that has proven quality and protection though.

Why do you change your oil every 500?

If you're tracking every 500 m that makes sense, but if no track use during 500 m there is no benefit to that. With Mobil 1, Valvoline synth, etc. the oil is still the same at 500 m as it was at 0 m.

I’m not saying you should change yours at 500 miles, I do it because its my car and I want to. It’s not the same at 500 miles that it was at 0. That would make no sense. I’m also not advising that anyone else should. My other car has a LS3 and I change that one usually at 3k miles. It’s something I enjoy. I probably change my brakes too soon too. It’s what I enjoy doing.

Send in a few samples for used oil analysis (UOA). Be a scientist. If you're just changing it at 500 miles with no basis other than a tradition you're throwing money in the trash can and wasting your time.

For a track car I can see it - for a street car there are literally hundreds of thousands of UOAs that PROVE - not guess, prove - oil change intervals less than about 3000-4000 miles are a complete waste of time and money (assuming a modern brand name synthetic oil of proper grade)

On the flip side, 10,000 mile oil changes are also crazy in most cases imo.

Is the 0w-40 for just the 2019 and newer or can the 2018 and older use it as well? My last oil change I did use the 0w-40. I might go back to the 5w-30. I never track. I do drive aggressive sometimes.

Zigg, if your 2018 calls for 5W30 like my 2017 then that’s what I would use. I don’t track mine and I’m using 5W30 and will until it’s not available anymore. I can’t justify spending more money on upgrading to a newer type of oil when the recommended oil is still being sold and can be used in my 2017.

I'm with you on that. I drank the kool-aid on the ESP when all the hoopla about it started but am switching back to 5W-30 next change.

It’s a good thing it’s my money and not yours. Like I stated I never told anyone else to do it I stated it’s what I do. I never quoted science behind it. Sounds like you should send samples since your quoting science. I really don’t care if you change it every 500 or every 10000 miles. It’s yours do what you think is best. Believe me I waste money on a lot dumber things and my car only has a little over 3k miles so its every 4 months not really a big deal.
