PF 64 Oil filter problem !

I'm at home today and after I pulled out my ZL1 and came back home I noticed a 2 inch oil spot where my car had been sitting since Sunday. I then drove the car on some ramps I made and found my PF64 loose(1/4 a quart of low oil) with a drop or two of oil on it and some on the oil pan. Once a filter contacts the surface you turn 3/4 of a turn more, or a full turn and check for leaks, I then tighten the filter with a pair of channel locks 1/4 a turn, then half a turn more, I could still remove the filter by hand. Long story short I read something about on turbo charger and supercharger motors. the inside of some filters collapses, and I noticed the pf64 is very soft when hot, and I think can cause motor issues in the long run. Mobil 1 sales a M1-113A with a metal case on the inside, twice as much $ wise but worth the peace of mind ! I think now some of those oil pump failures was due to pumps and pf64.

Side note a family member of mine had a pro charger 69 camaro that kept leaking oil, he replaced the rear main oil seal on a LS1, kept leaking, now we think it was that pf64, and I'm doing a twin turbo for my 72 chevelle , and this filter will not be on it.

Hmmm. I’ve been a licensed tech for about 25 years. Seen a couple, like 2 filter seals that were no good. Sure as shit about 2 months ago I take my ZLE in for my second last free oil change.
I go under the car and watch these guys and even double check their work. It was tight when I left.
Two weeks later I notice a maybe 3 inch spot on the driveway. Can’t be the ZLE but just in case I park it over some cardboard for the week. Following weekend I pull it out for a car show. Big stain of fresh oil on cardboard. Check oil level. Up to dealership. Go under with the guy. Filter is tight. Seal somehow failed. New filter, topped up oil.
Been fine since but watch steadily with fresh cardboard under the car. Looks like I may have to switch filter manufacturers.

I use Wix XP, it's build quality is better vs a std filter and not overpriced.

I think the Mobil has the wrong psi setting for the bypass valve, only the Fram and Wix have the correct setting.

I haven’t tried the Mobil 1 filter on my ZL1 yet but I used them on my 2016 SS and had no problems with seal leaks or collapse. I even used them on my 2010 SS LS3 and no problems either. The last oil filter I put on the 2016 was a Napa Gold before I traded it in on my ZL1 and it was good too. I have a new Mobil 1 113 from when I had the 2016 that I will use on the Z when I change the oil soon!

I’m thinking it might be defective rubber gaskets on some of the Delco oil filters!

To me, I would be suspicious of properly installing the new oil filter with regards to age old issues common to oil filters in general.

When removing the old filter, make SURE the rubber seal comes off with the filter and is not left sticking to the block. If you forget to check, and it turns out the old gasket was still stuck to the block and you install the new filter without removing it, you's end up with TWO rubber seals. If that happens, you won't get a good seal, resulting in possible leaks and the filter coming a bit loose.

You should NEVER need to use a wrench of any kind when installing a new filter. Simply tightening it by hand should be sufficient.

Always check the installation instructions that come with the new filter to verify how tight it should be.

The thing to remember with threads like this which definitively label a factory installed part “junk” is that the people who are most likely to respond are the ones who have had an issue, regardless of the actual cause. A countless number of perfectly unremarkable oil filter changes occur every day. FWIW, 8 oil filter changes (PF 64) and counting in my ZE, zero issues. Been changing my own oil in GM vehicles since probably 1977. Always use GM filters, never had had issue, ever.

GM is obviously not on board with labeling the PF64 as "junk". GM states on an LS7 (likely the LT4 as well) unless it has a PF64 attached to it in the event of a catastrophic failure, your warranty could be in jeopardy. I realize that certain filters are better quality. My LT4 will continue running with a PF64.

Defective filter seals happen. I know this from years of experience with both cars and heavy equipment. Fuel filters and oil filters. Mass production.
Now have a double seal, watch out cause in my experience it becomes a large leak fast if you don’t catch it in time. I learned about double seals when I was in co-op in high school.
I learned that the hard way off course.

But in saying that I wouldn’t necessarily label the filter model as junk. Only way to truly compare is by taking the various manufacturers filters apart for true analyzation. I’m sure most here realize this.
