LS3 Heads & Cam Recommendations
Looking for Recommendations & Opinions for LS3 Heads and Cam. - Natural Aspiration only.
I'm looking at the AFR 260 Mongoose heads, Comp Cam 54-496-11 / 231/247 .617/.624 113 LSA. Any information on this set up? What did you all go with. |

My cam n heads were spec'ed with more road course track days/AutoX in mind. My cam is milder than that Comp at 227/236. I'm using Trick Flow GenX 255 heads. There are some well-known Speed Shops in the Houston area. Have you considered working with a tuner/builder yet?

Awesome feedback guys! Thanks.
I used JRods in Rosenberg to do the tuning. They did a great job. So far I've got the Kooks 1 7/8 LT headers with high flow cats, 3" exhaust to Flowmaster resonators. 25% Underdrive crank pulley, K&N CAI, 95MM BBK throttle body. She pulled 423 HP 419 TQ on the dyno. I'm wanting to do SCCA road racing and the Texas mile, no quarter miles. If I can get a nice daily driver that is crazy fast with good throttle response on the track I'd be happy. Of course isn't that what everyone wants? LOL. I was looking at the Trick Flow, just read better reviews about the AFR heads. If you don't mind, what is that COMP Cam part number? |

I am curious what your setup netted for numbers? I am looking for a reliable daily driver and perhaps some roadcourse work. I also have a mild 220/230 cam from cam motion and likely either upgrading that cam or adding heads to it. My builder suggests AFR heads. Not sure what the net gain would be paired with existing. Does your setup lack anything down low? What is the mid and top end like? |

lol, been 4 years, hopefully he is still around and still has the car. Lots of people don't have them anymore. That's why you don't see anything from them. But worth a shot no less. Good luck sir..

That cam/heads set up was about 480 rwhp peak. SAE CF on a Superflo 880 chassis dyno. No, no drop in power in the lower range. It made more hp and tq than stock everywhere in the range. Of course, peak hp/tq were at higher revs. I think all of the aftermarket heads will produce about the same gains for you. My heads were probably good for about 20 HP. Like any cammed car, you have to adjust your driving style a bit. But it is still my "good weather daily-driver" even today.

Sounds like a fun setup. I am trying to compare HP/Dollar of the two. Either my small cam with added heads or SS3 cam and rod mod along. |

I AutoX and do occasional track days so I wanted a less aggressive cam and then used the TF heads to help make up the power difference. This cam is 227/236. Since then I've added IM and flex-fuel, a NOS setup for straight-line entertainment, etc. I debated on rod mod or FAST and went with FAST + NW102 TB so I have it for the future when I do a new bottom end and to complement the NOS set up now. I did e85 flex fuel for fun as I knew it would not add much while on stock bottom end/stock compression. If you are going to road course/autox, etc. I'd consider keeping the cam that is more friendly to that and add heads, the ported and rod modded IM, and perhaps a ported TB.
