I'm a proponent of the break in oil change because of the nasty stuff I've seen come out of the filter after those first few hundred miles.

Whatever you do, give it about 10,000 miles before switching to a synthetic or blend, you need to give your engine time to wear in.
Um, what?

The bottom line is: GM says change it when the oil life Monitor says to. I own or have owned a few 6.2's (5) and never have changed the oil (for the 1st time) with LESS than 2500 miles, I work My Trucks and Play Hard with the Cars and NONE of them use ANY oil. Oil filters are made to collect CRAP in the oil. Let the filter do its JOB. I Can't explain why changing the oil Early creates Problems, But I sure could Explain it if the change was to a Full Synthetic at 500miles.

These Di Lt engines have low tension rings for better economy they will use oil more than the LS1 engines.

I was half a quart low at 5000 miles when I did my second oil change and made sure the dealer knew it. First was at 1500.

FYI the C7 Corvette with the same engine has a factory fill of full synthetic. So do countless other cars...

I recall 1 quart per 900 mile being the threshold for consumption needing a repair.

Same... also changed at 1,500. And will again every 4,000 going forward. No oil loss yet. Currently around 3,100 miles (changed to mobile 1 at the 500 mark)

BTW, did the 500 mile change on mine and have not had any loss in the last 2000 miles.

As someone who had to try to explain oil consumption to many customers.... Due to tolerance build up an engine can use anywhere from 0 to 1 quart in 2000 miles and be within "Standard" only when consumption exceeds 1 quart in 2000 (verified thru oil consumption test) will any attempt to correct oil consumption. FYI until around 1995 it was 1 quart per 1000 miles

These oil discussion threads are always interesting. So many different opinions on this topic but I never see any real scientific data on any of it.

This. Endless debate when it comes to oil... along with break-in method.
