Questions/Suggestions for a mild LT4 Build.....looking for roughly 100HP over Stock
So....now that the 2018 track season has wrapped up (last weekend at Road Atlanta was a blast!).....I'm planning some mods over the winter to make the ZL1 1LE even bigger, faster, stronger. Well, ok, I'm really only interested in faster.
Three main upgrades: 1. CCB kit. Tore up the stock iron rotors in one season and miss the CCB's from my Z/28. The CCB's will run cooler and more importantly shave some weight. 2. Cut some weight. In addition to the CCB's, looking at an Antigravity battery and maybe some carbon fiber body pieces. The ONLY thing I don't love about the ZL1 1LE is the weight. Going up against cars that are more in the 3,300-3,400lb range. 3. Add around 100HP. The real purpose of this post. I've done a lot of searching and research on this......but here are my plans and some questions... I currently have the Rotofab intake, TM Throttle Body, AWE Track Edition Exhaust with secondary cat delete. What I would like to do is: 1. Upgrade the lower pulley. 8.65 (10%) or 9.10 (14%) 2. ARH Headers with no cats. (I'll likely add resonators to my AWE system to tone it down a wee bit......it's now pretty aggressive with the stock manifolds) 3. Full Dyno Tune. My goal is close to 100hp > stock, avoiding any cooling upgrades (she runs under 210degrees stock during 30 minute sessions in 95 degree ambient air temps now), retaining durability/reliability. I'm interested in real world results from others with mods like this.....do you think my goals of 100hp and running cool and reliable can co-exist......do you have recommendations of shops you have worked with and loved their work (Vengeance, Livernois, Lingenfelter, Weapon X, Others?)...any other advice or input? Would really appreciate any and all help with this. I'd like to make some final decisions on what to do and who to do it and get it booked for the upgrades this winter. Thanks!

I'd like to hear others thoughts and impressions of what you are asking. I too am looking to push 100hp more without my car pulling timing due to excessive heat.

I have a 9.1 lower, rotorfab and catless headers. I installed resonators as, without them, it sounded like crap but with the resonators it made a huge difference and sounds great. I beat on the car pretty hard and temps remain pretty steady.

I will second on the CCB kit, that is the main thing I miss about the Z/28

Thanks for the info! Any idea how much HP you gained? And by beat on it do you track it?? Looking to be able to hold down temps over 25 or 30 minute sessions....

Good to know! Which resonators did you go with?

I don't think you'll quite get an extra 100 with headers and lower pulley but that will be where I'm headed as well.

Thanks for the feedback Mike! So.....what do you think HP/TQ gains might be? Who's going to do your work? Are you planning to add any cooling mods? Appreciate your thoughts...

I've never dyno'd it, however the difference was enormous. I have to dyno it. I don't track it, but it literally has never seen a drive that doesn't hit 140-150+mph multiple times. Not the same as tracking it, but those are pretty long and repeated runs.

I think 100 hp is realistic with a pulley, headers, intake, TB, and tune. I haven’t had mine on the dyno recently, so I can’t really say. That’s my setup, but with a 2.30” upper.
You might want to keep it on the mild side as far as pulleys go, though. Either that or be prepared to do upgraded heat exchangers or something like Weapon-X’s boost chiller. Even with the 2.30” upper, I’d probably be doing heat exchangers if I were using mine as a track car. Was it your coolant that stays around 210? If so, I hope you weren’t getting that data from the stupid in-dash coolant “gauge”. That thing is beyond worthless. |

This is a video I found a while back of Vengeance making almost 100 whp with just an intake and 2.30” upper. Seems legit to me. Last edited by BMWM.D.; 11-23-2018 at 06:54 PM. |
